So I'm burning MAD oil....

So over the past couple oil changes ive noticed that im getting Really low on oil inbetween..so my last oil change was at 59,800 miles and i had my guy at the dealer (used the work there) write up an R.O. for my change this time to mark down the miles and such.

So last night i check the oil and its ridiculously low and the oil pressure light came on. i added 2 quarts and then went up to the dealer tonight and he almost put in another 2 quarts and we noticed that there is oil in my exhaust pipes. I'm at 62,800 miles!!

So they marked it down on the R.O. and im goin to take it agian in like 2 weeks when it gets low again and they're goin to have the acura rep come look at it and try to get me a new engine(they've done it before for an 04 tsx).

I just have to put my stock intake back on so that the rep doesnt bitch about it. He also told me it would be a good idea to put it a new clutch at the time they would do the engine cause they could just charge the hours of labor to the engine so i would just pay for the clutch.

I'll let you know how it works out and make sure you guys look out for this prob. Also i should mention that inbetween my last oil change (2000 miles) i honestly did not go above 4k rpms the whole time.

wish me luck

Cliffs: car burning ridiculous amount of oil
-could get replaced engine from acura

That sounds exactly like my prior situation, but without the hassle and crap I went through.

https://acurazine.com/forums/1g-tsx-problems-fixes-128/rebuilt-engine-got-my-car-back-664193/

It eventually turned out in my favour -- not a single sign of burning any oil at all since then.

IIRC from curls' terrible adventure, Honda doesn't consider it a serviceable problem until you're burning at a rate of 1 quart (or was it liter?) per 1000 miles.

This isn't an 04 specific problem.

I believe the magic cutoff is 1q/600mi, or 1L/1000km. Both are basically the same.

Even if it's close but not worse than that, I'd definitely be pushing for replacement of the bottom end and a rebuild of the top end (assuming they don't just replace the entire engine incl. the head).

Would they only replace it if you're the original owner?

I'm not the original owner (bought it w/ 71,000km) but I'm sure that buying it from the dealership didn't hurt my chances any.

It's very rare. There's nothing you're going to be able to look at for sure and know. Honestly, it's probably right in line or better than the failure rates seen in any other car. It's not even worth letting it influence your decision.

If they say they are rebuilding, do yourself a huge favor and ask them specifically what they found that requires them to rebuild (rings/valve seals, etc). The reason I say this is because they did a FULL rebuild on all seals, rings, etc... any my car still burned oil.

If you need more information on my specific case, PM me and I can try to put you in touch w/ the service manager or operations manager at my dealership, either of whom might be able to send information to your dealership to save everyone time and money.

dmassott: are you the original owner of the car? If you are, how did you drive the car during the first 600-1000 miles? Did you drive on the highway at all during that time? Or on the city?

thanks for the help,i'll keep that in mind. they are pushing for a new engine since they know me..the adjuster came out on friday and was taking pictures of the engine all torn apart. the warranty people are going to call on monday and say what they want to do.
my service manager is saying they'll prob replace the engine since they have already done it on an 04 before at my dealer.

haha so my buddy just called me and said the warranty doesnt want to cover it cause they said it looks like it was raced because of the wheels(lol honda wheels) and the tinted tail lights and i need to call acura care too fight it.

lol so i call the number and its uncle bill's restaurant lol

anyway they said if our mechanic can repair the head (or whatever) then they'll put a new motor in in. if cant repair the heads then they'll look for a junk yard engine..so we'll lsee

Look up the Magnusson-Moss act. You should have no problem getting this warrantied.

Fight this tooth and nail until you get a new engine, period.

Oil gets dirty as part of it's job. There's nothing you can tell by looking at it. If you check your oil level, it's fine then drive 1000 miles and it's no longer on the dipstick, you've got problems. Just check your oil regularly if you're worried about it. If you have to add a full bottle more often than maybe 3000 miles, you've got cause for concern.

"We can tell the car's been raced because ... of tinted tail lights...." Would be funnier if you wren't looking at such a catastrophic problem (problems) on your car. Hope Acura is going to do right by you, I also bought mine CPO at ~ 35,000 miles. You're simply not supposed to need new engines and clutches at 65,000 miles IMHO.

Normally I think when i check my oil level its fine above the line, Never had to add oil yet but maybe i should check the levels more often ?

When do you guys think its best to check levels?
like after a short drive?

Exactly what they did with mine - rebuilt head, new short block.

You'll likely have the "revised" (2006-2008) version of the short block like mine. Enjoy the supposed reduced pumping losses, possibly giving one or two HP gain...
