RPMs not dropping as expected

When I take my foot off the gas pedal, the RPMs are not dropping as they used to. The engine eventually returns to idle, but it takes way a few seconds and I'm using the brakes more than I'm accustomed to. The check engine light has not come on and I disconnected the battery in hopes that the ECU needed to re-learn something... no change.

Any suggestions?
