Are maintenance-free batteries really free?

The battery says maintenance-free, and the cylinders are sealed with plastic. But are they really maintenance free? My battery died last week after 20 mins listening to music (new setup), with the engine off. My neighbor says he adds distilled water to the maintenance-free batteries in his Lexus and two Ford vehicles; and suggested I do the same. What do you folks recommend?

I was able to recharge the battery after having it plugged to the wall for 7 hrs. I used to be able to listen to music for hrs, while washing the car. I can't imagine I need a new battery already, after only 22 months. (30,000 miles)
