Gas Gauge Question

This is my first Acura/Honda so I might be asking a routine question. I've noticed that if I fill the tank and reset the odomoter the gas gauge drops to about 1/2 way in about 160 miles. Range on a tank should be about 450 miles for highway driving so this seems odd to me. If I fill the tank as soon as the The yellow warning light comes on I can only add about 12 gallons to the tank (I believe its a 17 galon tank). If I wait until the gauge is almost at E, I can add about 14 gallons.

Is this how the gauge is supposed to work? My previous car was a BMW 328i and when the light came on you had about 3 gallons left and when it hit E you had about 1/2-1 gallon left which seems more accurate. Also it didn't drop rapidly from F to halfway.

Is this what others are seeing?

Thanks,

Yes, I think it sucks. But the navi has a trip setting that tells you supposily how many miles you can still go. I add 70 miles to it and it usually works out fine.

I think the gauge odes this to keep the average/uninformed consumer from getting themselves stranded cause they run out of gas.

Personally, I don't even pay attention to the gas gague anymore. I usually just use my trip meter to know when I need a refill.

Well the NAVI trip setting is great. for the most part. I fill up and it's at about 383 miles left. Then once I get on the highway and start driving it jumps over 425 or so. I usually take it down to about 10-15 miles left on the tank.
