Fixing a bad touch-up paint job?
My friend's pearl white TSX has a rock chip on the hood. We went to the Acura dealership and bought a bottle of touch-up paint. We matched the color code found by the driver side door. We shoke the bottle and applied the paint with a toothpick, layer by layer, with about 10 minutes wait time in-between each layer. We applied total of four layers. I must admit that we didn't do a good job. We ended up with extra paint around the edge of the chip. But what frustrates us the most is that the color matching is extremely poor. The dried touch-up paint on the hood is basically transparent, with very little pearl white color to it.
What did we do wrong? Too few layers? Bad touch-up paint?
And what can we do now to fix this? Can we get rid of the current layer of touch-up paint and start over?
Or are we screwed?

I purchased some touch up paint from the dealer for my PWP TSX. I had some scratches on the rear bumper. I found that a thick coat of paint was needed to get around the problem that the paint is almost clear. The color match was poor. My dealer sold solvent to strip off touch up paint. The good news is the solvent works and wont harm the factory paint. I purchased Honda White Scratch Fix 2 in1 Duplicolor paint from an auto parts store. This product worked fairly well. A thin coat covered the scratch and the ball point applicator did not apply too much paint. The color match was much better then the dealer paint.

Since this product works for you, I want to try to get the same one.
Thanks in advance.

I purchased the OEM touch-up paint for my PWP TSX and it was in a bottle with brush. There IS DEFINATELY pearl IN the paint itself.
And yes, I've had the same problem of the paint being too transparent. I might get a white base coat to apply (some regular'ol white touch up paint) and then put this on top for the proper color match + pearl.
And this solvent -- is it similar to the idea of langka, that takes off touch-up blobs down to the level of the factory paint, leaving a nice touch-up job? Brand name would be AWESOME.
Thanks

I found one or two links referring to it on Google. Try an Infiniti dealer as well as your local Acura dealer. There was one link that said he got it at his Infiniti dealer. Something like $12-$18.00 for the bottle.

I also bought touch up paint from the dealer only a couple of weeks ago. I asked about a pen style, and he told me it only comes in the bottle with brush applicator. I also noticed that the paint was very transparent. Considering their paint is more expensive than going to a car parts place, you'd think it would be a better fit.

In Canada we have both the bottle and the pen available for touch-up. I had no problems with the touch up pen. Did 3 coats of the white and then finally did 2 coats of the pearl, and it all matches really well
It sounds like the bottle stuff just needs to be mixed better. Try giving it a rigorous shake before use (maybe shake for a minute or two)

And I shook the bottle/brush for at LEAST 2 full minutes... and pretty fiercely, too!
*note to self: Get pen-style next week when I'm getting both headlights replaced under warranty (fogging).*

THe one from Acura is the one that says Acura right on it.
And the Touch-Up Magic from that blue-lightning site is the stuff I found online elsewhere. Of course, however, I can't get Google to find what I found this afternoon. LOL

Just to let you all know, I did a lot of research into removing paint blobs (like what everyone in this thread is searching for), and came across a product that is well known and works well. It's called Langka. Langka is basically overpriced ($20+) stuff you can find in your local automotive store ($4.50), and it all boils down to this:
1. Go buy a small can of automotive lacquer thinner. ($3.50)
2. Eat a few popsicles and save the sticks (or use "craft sticks" that are essentially pre-eaten popsicles). ($1.00)
3. Cut up your little brothers' favorite t-shirt. Get a 3"x1.5" strip, or two or three.
Once you have let the touch-up paint dry for about 24 hours, wrap the stick ONCE with the t-shit material, and dip about 1/2 - 1" into the lacquer thinner. (I put about 1" of lacquer thinner into an old Pyrex measuring cup to make it easier).
Then once the t-shirt has absorbed some thinner, shake it once (away from the car) to remove excess thinner from dripping, and then lightly work the stick over the blob (flat-side down)... about 4-8 passes are required, but you will easily be able to tell for yourself. This will "remove" the blob and not harm the factory baked-on clearcoat.
Once the blob is gone to your satisfaction, let the area dry for about 1 minute, and wipe with another strip of dry t-shirt from your brothers' favorite t-shirt.
Repeat on all other blobs.
Take some polishing compound and polish each area to remove any sanding scuff marks from before you applied the paint (and to re-shine the clear aroudn the repair).
Apply some clear-coat touch up paint (one or two very thin layers). Wait a week, polish, and wax.
Voila.
Now, to find a damn touch-up paint that matches PWP perfectly AND ISN'T FREAKIN' TRANSPARENT!!!! GRRRR.....
