Drivers Seat Moving - Fixed

So I finally got pissed off enough to take a look at my seat. From the picture below is the issue (circled in red). That space is what is causing the seat to move side to side and front to back. Once you look under your seat, you will see everything is connected to each other. Simple fix:

1) Take a washer, slot it, clamp the bracket to that mushroom shaped end to remove the gap, and tack weld a washer to the rod on the opposite side of the bracket. What this does is still allows that seat bottom to still move up and down, while removing that play that has happened over time. I took more time to get the seat out, that to do this simple mod. My seat has completely stopped moving around and feel 100% solid!

Here is the bar and the bracket where you need to tack weld the slotted washer to. I also added grease to prevent it from binding up.

If I do not have the necessary tools to perform a tack weld, would you say there are any alternatives? If no, what (tool wise) would be needed to perform the tack weld(s).

Thank you. Finally a solution to this problem other than "take it back to the dealer and get it fixed"

You could try JB Weld and see if its strong enough to hold..

I wonder if 5-minute epoxy would work... I have some in my garage and could do that in a few minutes on my own... no welder at my place.

What about some type of very stong clamp? By looking at the diagram, it looks like the only purpose of the weld and washer is to hold the bar all the way to the right and to take up the slack. I am not sure what type of clamp this would be, maybe some iteration of a hose clamp on steroids....

I have seen guys on maxima.org make an entire intake system out of a K&N filter and PVC pipe. Surely we can find a "Ghetto" fix for our seats (for those without welders).....

PS: The name of the PVC intake was called the GAB (Ghetto Air Box).

Epoxy or JB Weld should be strong enough... probably moreso than a hose clamp, especially if you rough up the bar that you're "welding" the washer to, so that the epoxy or JB Weld will adhere better.

Well, you would have to take out all 4 bolts holding it down, and tilt it back, but at that point, might as well unplug the sensors (disconnect battery first as one is the seat airbag) and pull out the seat to give you full access.

sorry for the thread resurrection.

i took my car in and my dealer acknowledged that this is a problem on tsx's. they did find that my driver's seat has "play" and will get me new seat rails/tracks. they didn't have it in stock so they'll call me when they get it in...

just an FYI in case anyone else has this problem and their cars are still under warranty...

no problems with the seats on my 06 tsx (knock-on-wood) My car is out of warranty.

Actually, THANKS for resurrecting this thread -- I forgot that I read (and replied within) it, but the seat movement is still driving me crazy to this day. I think I'll tackle it with some epoxy or JB Weld this weekend.

Strangely enough, I took everything out and flipped the seat over today, and couldn't see where this would have worked in my case. The bracket that you clamped and then used the washer on, didn't have ANY play in it at all, yet my seat still moves slightly when going into my driveway at an angle. I don't think my metal-epoxy idea would be strong enough anyhow. Maybe someday when I have access to a welder, I'll try this again... but for now I don't see how this would have fixed my seat from moving.

Sam, care to get together one day and you have a look at it?

You can try the split collar. No welding required and they come in different sizes. This is the same type that Progress used on some of the swaybar setup to to prevent shifting.

ok, so i got my new seat tracks/rails installed today. there is no play at all right now and the car feels solid.

unfortunately, service advisor said it'll probably happen again cuz' honda hasn't received enough complaints to re-engineer the rails to get rid of the problem. in other words, its a known problem but they're not going to do anything about it. "its designed that way". supposedly, its up to the service tech to determine how much "play" is acceptable...

here's the kicker - i got a 09' tsx as a loaner and the driver seat STILL MOVED!!!

well, i am bumping this thread, due to me having the loose seat. Has anyone tried putting the washer between the mushroom shaped end, and the square bracket? I dont have a tack welder, so i am thinking about using the washer as a shim to get rid of the play, and use a little jb weld on the washer to "weld" it to the mushroom end. What do ya think?

suzook, just from looking at it in the picture (i don't have htis problem on my 2004) it looks like a shim between the mushroom shaped bolt and the bracket would work, but you have find a way to keep the shim from coming loose.

I will try a little epoxy on the side of the washer. This "should" keep it in place. I guess i will give an update on how it works..

Update, i just inspected the seat. the looseness in my seat is not because of play in the above post. It is the tracks that have some play. the screw in the tracks has about 1/4" in and out play. I guess i will have to live with it.

Note that if your seat is moving forward and backward, this is probably a different issue that if your seat moves side to side. I can't prove this, but after reading a lot of posts on the forum, it seems as though the forward/bakward and side/side seat moving issue has two different causes which may require a two qualitatively different fixes.
