Clunk on Acceleration from Stop

Well I was hoping to never have to post in this forum especially as an April 03 adopter that is out of the warranty period so any ideas on what I may check out would be appreciated.

From a stop(every stop) if I give the car some gas I hear a clunk from the front end. It sound similar to the ABS test in tone and duration. If I ease into the throttle slowly there is no clunk. At first I was thinking it was the AT, however, it seems to be working completely normally in all facets and if I floor it from a stop(there is the clunk) but no slipping or anything else. I'm thinking that it is most like somethign suspension related to the weight shift on a quick start.(or a motor mount?) The other possibility I've been thinking is that my brakes are bout due for replacement and quite worn so maybe they aren't releasing from the rotor cleanly.

Any one else every seen or heard anythign similar and have any idea what I might look at first?

Have you tried getting some help with a friend to pinpoint the noise? If you could do this on the driveway, have a friend close by (standing outside) as you do a series of stop and go's. Or have your friend do the stop and go's.
Sounds like something loose in the engine bay.

I have some time to work on it this weekend so this will definitely be on my list of things to do.

Are the motor mounts in the TSX hydraulic like they were in the previous gen TLS? I remember there being some issue with them.

As a side note the car is still working well in all other facets and i'm actually getting about the best mileage I have ever to date which makes me think nothing major mechanically is wrong.

Ya, I came across the same supply issue when I ordered mine.

August 2020 for me.

Sounds like this may be impossible to diagnose. That noise could be anything. Off to the dealer you go.

I'd rather not go to the dealer and I'm going to see if I can get the car on jackstands and figure it out this weekend.

I know, you told me remember Too bad he didn't like you enough to move that delivery date up.

Good luck with finding out what it is. I'd wait for JTso to chime in.

http://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/3/335icoupe/techdata.htm

Auto gear ratios in brackets. THey are identical to the sedan(though there is a typo online at bmw under the sedan section)

The autos launch much better than the manuals and shift quite fast.

Of course. Average gains on a car with just the refalsh(91 octane) is 45hp 70tq. But gains of 60/100 have been seen.

It does expose a major issue with the 335 though; no stock LSD. Putting that ridiculous torque down is not easy.

Try jack up the car and support it on jack stands. Then rotate the wheel back and forth to see if you can reproduce the noise. It might be a defective CV joint.

Thanks for the tip JTSO. I'm going to do that this weekend. Could a bad CV joint cause a clunk when harder accerlation is used but nothing noticeable with a more gradual acceleration?

It's possible but it may not be the actual problem. It's just one of those easy things to check. Does it make the noise when shift from neutral to D from a stand still?

I don't believe so. But if it did what would be Dr. JTSOs diagnosis?
