chipped fog light glass-basically new

Got the acura foglights installed on Friday, Mar 31 on my 04 tsx. Wife drove the car on interstate to visit family over the weekend. Inspected fogs upon her return, drivers side cracked. Pissed. $500 for parts and labor, plus I purchased high end PIAA yellow Ion Plasma bulbs (another $72). Review of posts reveal this is a common problem. Why would a reputable car maker use a fragile glass for the lens in the FRONT of a freaking car??? Not sure what to do, but not happy at all. May send invoices to Acura customer service so they can see just how fast these fog lenses failed. Was worried the PIAA bulbs were too hot and maybe contributed, but I don't think my wife even had them on during the trip, as she was mainly traveling during daylight.
Are the 06 TSX fog lenses the same as these? If so, there should be many many folks with busted fog lenses soon (since they come standard on the car)- Any thoughts or updates on this issue that I may have missed in the search???

Welcome to the club!!!

This problem has been discussed at length. My 04 had both foglights broken within 3 months. I got replacements on E-Bay and I am now looking for a protective film kit to install on the foglights before I install them. One problem with using protective film. Don't use your fogs while the car is not moving. They will yellow.

I agree that this is BS for an upscale car!!!

Good luck!

I purchased and installed the Weathertech "LampGards" about 6 months (15k miles) ago. So far so good. No further breaks/cracks. No browning either (BUT, I only use the fog lamps when necessary).

Here's a thread on the subject.

Some people on other forums have a DYI on replacing the glass portion of the lense with a lexan plastic piece which is safe to about 300 degree. It's pretty straight forward to replace. Remove the old lense, there's a ring I believe that holds the lense down. Removes the old broken lense, it's siliconed on so you ned to get rid of as much of the goop as possible. Cut out a pieces of lexan that fits the lamp housing, silicon it back in with high temp silicon and put the ring back on.

do you have to take the lights out of the bumper or can you simply apply onto surface of the fogs while still in bumper?
thanks

I use Venture Shield protection film. It's gauranteed not to yellow. But yes! Get film put on those lights as soon as you put them in! Better yet, put the film on before you put the lights in. The film kits run from $30-60 and are wll worth it. Specially those fogs.

You don't need to remove the lights from the bumper to install the film. (This is no more than a 30 minute task with no tools required!)

So this weather tech site includes the film for both the headlights and fogs or is it to sperate kits.

This seems like a common problem I noitced in the 01-03 Civic with the O.E.M fog lights.... My sisters old 03 Civic fogs got crack and chipped on a 500 mile road trip.

I orderd OEM fogs for my Accord and they are glass.....I'm looking into some film to protect them....why doesn't Honda Make them Lexan like the Acura RLs?

acura manager pulled thru and said as goodwill gesture, got permission to replace my damaged lens (even though not a warranty coverage). maybe they looked up my file on their computer and see what I pay them for scheduled maintenance and realize they are still way ahead of the game! anyway, glad they are working with me- Leith Acura of Raleigh NC pretty good to deal with!
Will look into applying the film protection on the lenses now-

Ok...seems like everybody's solution to protecting the glass area of the foglight is to place a peice of film on the lense. My idea is to find a rubberized spray to spray onto the glass lense. I wonder if there is such a product. I looked and can;t seem to find any. Any ideas?

Read this thread on the subject. It's more complete. I did the screens over my foglights (page 2 of the thread).

so you have had no issues with the venture shield film over the fogs? Do you use the fogs often?
I have read conflicting views on these films and I am a bit confused, I sure don't like the idea of a film melting and burning on the lense, nor do I like the idea of rocks pelting and cracking these somewhat expensive lights!
thanks
