Auto Tranny Fail?

Auto Tranny Fail?
I have an 06 TSX 05AT. Last week i was driving and when i tried to pass someone, my RPMs suddenly dropped to idle. so i'm guessing it dropped to neutral instead of staying in gear.
I still had like 4 miles to go to my destination on the highway so i just kept going... the rpms would pick up if i gas a little harder, but as soon as i let go, it drops down to idle. this is in D not SS mode.
I tried putting it in SS mode, but no #'s showed up and it was the same as it is in D.
It was raining at the time but i don't think that should affect it?
I only got 35k on the odo.
I stopped the car and restarted it when i got off the highway and everything is fine now but i can't replicate it. But i wan't the dealer to take a look at it so What should i do?
Can i ask them to run a diagnostic?

It's hard to understand what happened - did you get a check engine light?
I'm reading between the lines here; it sounds like the drive-by-wire system took a temporary hike, but that would have set an error code and the SES light.

no lights. Seems like the tranny flipped out for a bit.
No check engine or error codes. Looking it seemed fine, just the revs would all drop to idle.
SS mode wouldn't work. Putting it in D3 was the only way i could get it to stay in gear. but thats becuase i was going 60 on the highway. Other than that i couldn't get the car to stay in gear. Just drops off everytime i'm not accelerating.

My first suspicion was VSA, but then you said that SS mode didn't function. I haven't a clue! Though you do not have a CEL, it's possible that the ECU recorded something.
If you have time to burn, it wouldn't hurt to take it into the dealership.

true, ^^ take it to the dealer, even if the SES light didnt illuminate there may still be some fault codes in the transmission control module, and some of those codes do not set the SES ligt on.

Mine is now in the shop for a possible tranny fail. Not happy at all. I'm outta warranty and I'm almost done paying for it.
FYI, my tranny was doing exactly as was described in the first post and then it conked out. It was a little clunky this month, but nothing noticeable til this last day.

Carbongray Earl:
Man, that is terrible.
I have several questions:
1) Are you the original owner of the car or did you buy used?
2) How many miles does your car have?
3) Have you ever changed the tranmission oil?
4) Did the car leave you completely stranded on the side of the road or were you able to limp back home? When you say it conked out, when you put it in drive it just would not go anywhere while accelerating? Did you have to have it towed?
Keep us posted.

^^
1 Original owner
2 91k Miles
3 Tranny serviced every 30k
4 I was stranded, going uphill of all things. Couldn't do anything but put the emergency brake on. I had it towed.
Its in the shop now, and they will try and diagnose it for me.

The exact same thing happened to me with a 03 Hyundai Sonata. It had less than 100 miles on it when the transmission locked up. (the check engine light went on) The transmission was finally replaced.

CarbonGray Earl:
1) Since you had transmission serviced every 30K and failure happened at 91000 miles, does this mean that you last had it serviced about 1000 miles before the failure at 90000 miles?
2) Did you check the level of the transmission fluid after the last service?

I had it serviced at 85k and I checked the fluids after the service, and I took a look at it and all my fluids last week.
The manual says it should be serviced at 120k miles. Does anyone here actually follow that?

Thanks for the support guys and gals. I just hope the service person is a good advocate for me with the DSM.
lcrazyaznl, he got a loaner reserved for me when he heard I was coming in. I've established a pretty good rapport with the guy from previous services and repairs.
Since this is an Auto Tranny Fail thread, I'll update you guys when I get more info. I'm faxing him my service history today.
And if you have questions about my mods, highlight the area under my sig. Its nothing out of the ordinary, though Hondata makes me nervous about what I can get. Still, this tranny is approved for a CT-E supercharger?

lol i hope my tranny doesn't fail =[ but yeah paragon is a bitch with the loaoners. last time i put in a date 1 month prior for them to fix my navi cause they showed me the calendar where the loaners were taken, so i put 2 weeks past the last appointment. The day comes and they tell me they have no more loaners =\

Miami: I honestly don't know. Max torque gain and max HP gain is 26 and 29 respectively for hondata, but I think the peak HP is only 4 hp higher and peak torque is 6 or 7. I would imagine the header pushes that up a good bit, and CT intake to a lesser extent. The combination of the 3 isn't additive of course.
However, this car can accept a supercharger, which makes gobs more power than what I have.
TSX6363: get it checked and make sure they know what's up. Build a service history through them, because that's exactly what they look for. My Jiffy lube drain and fills were almost looked down upon in Acura's opinion.
Now for an update:
My service advisor, Hector Ruiz at Metro Acura in Montclair, CA called me back today. The bad news....as the Germans say, 'Ze tranny is KAPUT!' Typically, a transmission replacement costs 3600. :whut: I looked this up before I got on the phone with him and indeed, Acura trannies do cost about 3500 to replace. I am well out of warranty and my car isn't exactly a prime example of keeping things stock. So I wasn't expecting much of a discount.
The good news? He was able to talk the DSM to 1500 from the original 3600. To which I said, that's great! I guess its more relief as opposed to happiness, but I'm pretty grateful for the work he put in to get me that price. He did really go to bat for me.
The caveat is that the tranny somewhat of a rebuilt one....the case is from another vehicle, but the components inside will be brand-spanking new. I could live with that for 1500.
And with this price, I wouldn't mind trading it in if things don't work as they used to. If I spent over 3000, I'd feel obligated to keep it. Anyways, that's whats going on with my tranny. Keeping my fingers crossed that its going to run better than it used to.

lol i don't service my car at the dealer ever. I've been doin all the maintenance myself. College students can't afford those prices =[.
Does it sound like it could be a tranny issue? cause i asked my friend who's a mechanic and he said it sounds like its a sensor bug out. He told me it should be alright unless it happens again and when it does there will be a check engine light with the code... should i wait that long? i still have 14k on my warranty. 50k 4 years right? so i have some time.

^^this might be one of those instances where you would thank someone for being mean or harsh.
If you think getting it checked or serviced cost alot, think about how much a new tranny would cost after your warranty is up. $3500 is alot more money than I had in my bank account at all during college.

My power heated seat failed on me its a 1200 dollar job to fix the incline module... not even replacing a new seat least i can wait on a seat and replace it myself.
Great to hear things are good with the tranny, I personally service mine at 30,000 miles just cuz its an auto and I drive quite a bit of highway miles.
I was way out of my warranty so i'm out of luck if the tranny goes.
But so far no sign tranny is running quite smooth and strong still.

^^thanks man. I've always suspected my tranny was kinda shady....I had a couple of posts on here asking about it.
Anyways, ever since things have been going wrong with my TSX, I've brought it to this guy. So I established a pretty good rapport with him. When the shit hit the fan, it was good to have that him in my corner, even with how much we all distrust dealerships.
Good that your tranny is doing well. Keep doing the 30k service and keep records. It rare that anything goes wrong with a TSX auto tranny, but as in my case, being able to establish a service history and having a good relationship with a service advisor can go a long way.

got my car back. Happy about the tranny, I didn't know how much my previous one had degraded. This one is very direct and doesn't lag. My old one lagged, which I thought was normal. Apparently, its not....so this is a great change. My car is quicker now.
However, my only complaint is the shifter is a little more clunky sliding over to SS mode now, and there is a little play when in SS. I sorta expected it to not return to the previous state, so this is a very small complaint.
On a side note, while they were down there, they found a cracked motor mount, so they fixed it (after my approval). Saved me some money since they had everything out.
Anyways, problem resolved for me to my satisfaction.

Congrats CarbonGray Earl.
What exactly do you mean by lag?
Are you maybe referring to following situation?:
You are in regular automatic mode (D4) no sportshift. You are going 25 miles an hour and slow down to maybe 5 to 10 miles an hour to make a left. Immediately upon making left, you floor it. The transmission (in full auto mode and not sport shift) takes its time to shift to first gear. More time than regular car old automatic car in the past without drive by wire.

^^ that used to happen to me too, but that's not what I meant by lag. I've always thought that was weird that too because its never happened with my other auto Honda. Slow down to 5 or 10, foot on the brake pedal, then back to accelerator with a little power would produce a very jerky shift to one. Haven't tested that on this tranny yet.
What I meant by lag though, is the situation where you're going a steady 50 or 60 in third. As soon as I floored it (still in third, SS mode), the engine would rev, then drop a 100 or 200 rpm, then the torque converter would lockup and give me the power. All that took a half second, but it was disconcerting. It happened from day 1, so I thought it was the way things went in this car.

i dont mean to steal the thread, but i have an 04 AT with just a little under 140,000 miles..i have no idea whats going on with the transmission, it happened about a month ago i was drivin down the highway goin about 45mph then i went to pass someone and my rpm's shot up to redline then i couldnt even press the gas without the rpm's shooting up. i pulled into a parking lot and parked, the reverse still worked but no drive. i tried putting it in SS mode and still didnt work, i turned the car off for a couple hours and tried turning it back on, i put the car in drive and it worked until i tried going over 20mph then the rpm's would shoot up and i wouldnt move i would just idle, if i stopped at a red light i couldnt even get the car to move again without tapping the gas and then it kinda 'caught' and moved me a lil bit eventually that didnt even work so i tried parking the car but the car wouldnt come out of drive i had to turn the car off and put it in park..that was a month ago, NOW i turn the car on at least twice a week to move it to the other side of the street bc of the street sweeper, the car turns on and makes a weird noise from the transmission, the engine light stays on i can drive the car under 20mph but only for a short amount of time, when i put the car in reverse it takes about 5seconds then a loud clunk comes from the transmission and then the car reverses.....i have no idea whats wrong , any input would be awesome!!! thanks guys

Hmm. Now I'm all paranoid about my transmission! It doesn't have any symptoms of having any problems, but I don't want it to fail any time soon.
Would it be worth while to install a transmission cooler?

lol its fine i kinda figured...now i have another question, i dont really make too much money so i was thinking of just buying a used transmission with low miles, or should i just get mine rebuilt? if i do the rebuilt route anyone know the range of it? thx
#40
jptsx, to be frank, that shit is busted. At 140k miles, you should have had a transmission service already, so have a record of that.
If you can't find a reputable shop to do it for you, go to Acura and do it. I've heard trannies are 3400 to 3600...it shouldn't go over 4000. However, at 140k miles, I'd just try my luck with a rebuilt. In my case, a rebuilt one cost 1500 parts and labor at the dealership. I might have gotten a better deal elsewhere, but I thought it was a reasonable price for work done at a dealership with Acura parts.
But ya, you're transmission is a no go....that's exactly what happened to me.
