No need to lift to shift. The automatic transmission in the TSX is just that. It's programed to allow shifting it yourself, but it's in no way related to for example the DSG transmission found in some VW/Audi products. That transmission is a manual transmission with an electronic clutch.

Think he's referring to Sequential SportShift mode (SSM), as in the other thread.

I've tried to find a sweet spot with the drive by wire throttle, and it's just not as clear cut as with my other manual (transmission) vehicles. Not having a "friction point" to learn makes it tough with the SSM. Trial and error has got me learning just how much to let off the gas without overrevving the engine while the tranny shifts. But I still miss the mark regularly, and make this awful, amateurish reeVVVV sound as I'm shifting. Maybe I'm having to unlearn years of throttle adjustment learned in an '77 MGB, '82 Accord LX, and '87 Jeep Wrangler.

My ... let off the gas while you're getting accustomed to SSM. Then start experimenting a bit with the shift 2->3 or 3->4 (the latter being the easiest to experiment with, IMHO). As always, practice good judgment, do this where there are no other cars or pedestrians about. We don't want your next post to be about your first crash.

My comments were directed to just this. I don't mean to disillution anyone, but whether in fully automatic or shift-it-yourself mode (I guess SSM is what Honda calls it), the transmission does the same thing; either on its' own, or by you moving the lever, the actual shift dynamics are the same. If you lift when moving the lever from one gear to the next, it would seem to me that all that you're doing is losing momentum (and time, and maybe a few precious revs). I lived for years with various versions of the shift-it-yourself grandaddy, the Porche/Audi Tiptronic. Feel free to experiment with Honda's version of this in-vogue transmision and do what works best, but I decided long ago (before I decided that 99% of the time you might as well just leave it in drive) that if you want to upshift yourself, pedal to the metal to redline and push the lever; the transmision will do the rest.

Not to argue with you, but when I first got mine, and still does this,... I kept my throttle at the same point while doing SSM, the engine would race to the redline during the brief shifting delay. I moved the shift lever to the up position pretty swiftly too. Maybe something's wrong with my tranny?

Simba, old chum, I stand corrected. I think when I was trying SSM early, I was accelerating like a bat out o' hell, with the pedal to the metal. Today, coming home, I tried just keeping my gas pedal in the same position while snicking through the SSM gears. Worked fine, very little lag or overrevving noted. Thanks, I learned something from you (again).
