30K TSX Service

Just got back from the dealer... Whew this is one of those "major" services apparently:

30K Service (Book rate 2.70 Hours Labor)...............................$229.50

Replace Auto Transmission Fluid (4 Qts @ $5.36/qt)......$21.44
Clean Brakes (1 Can Cleaner @ $3.25/can).......$3.25
Clean Fuel Injectors (1 Can Cleaner @ $4.95/can)..........$4.95
18mm Drain Washer (1 at $2.30/washer)..............$2.30
Oil Filter (1 @ $8.66)...................$8.66
14mm Drain Washer (1 @ 36¢)..............36¢
Windshield Washer Fluid (1 @ $2.87).........$2.87
Engine Air Cleaner Element (1 @ $24.61).........$24.61
400mm Rubber (?) (1 @$5.38).................$5.38
650mm Rubber (?) (1 @ $5.49)................$5.49
Element, Filter (Pollen).....(1 @ $46.25)......$46.25
Oil (4 @ $3.61/qt)..................................$14.44
Oil Haz Material Disposal.........................$1.50

Then they found out the rear brake pads were shot so we got to add:

1.20 Hours Labor...................$102.00
Pad Set, Rear........................$59.58

Rental Car.............................$10.00

===================

Labor $331.50
Parts $185.14
Lube $15.94
Misc Charges $10.00
Total.......$542.58
Tax.........$14.35
Please Pay $556.93

Labor was the worst - $331.50 for about 3-4 hours of work. They charge by the book.

Oh well, at least she rides like brand new now.

Seems kinda high. I don't remember having to shell out that much money at the 30k service. I believe it cost somewere in the mid-300s. Why do they charge time? Isn't it a set price package? Ie: Type D service.

$556 included the brake work which was needed - chirping wheels, etc. The 30K maintenance alone was around $250-350.

Again, for the third time, I was given a dirty rental car. This time it was the Honda Accord DX. Ugh I hated that thing.

In reviewing that list I was a bit displeased but it's my own falt. I just needed it done.

They are trying to use an RSX maintenance schedule on me and claiming the TSX is just the same. Reading the TSX maintenance online there are only 5 items and no mention of changing the ATF fluid.

Oh well, I now know for next time.

If it took me 1.2 hours to change pads on all four wheels yet alone 2 I would be slow. Dealers always rip people off for brake jobs because its the one thing people won't argue about. If you can change a spark plug you can change brake pads.

Ouch, but if you're not complaining, I guess it's fine.

I always felt that dealerships should not charge you for certain things such as any cleaning fluids that they use or for the hazmat disposal. That is a cost they should incur as part of doing business. I will be sure to pay attention when I take my car to have its service performed.

I didn't say it was fine. But I was faced with having to have the work done. I have to take the car on some other projects this weekend and it was the only time I could get to the shop. Of course I'm not happy with having to pay $350 for routine services and inspections but it was something that (short of shopping around) had to be done.

Like I said, the next time I'll be shopping around.

I'm sure this is the case. However, I had neither the tools nor the facilities to do the work. I don't have a garage and working on your cars in the parking lot is frowned upon.

If I had my own garage I would be more than happy to learn how to do these things. Besides, I wasn't sure if it was only the pads that needed to be changed. I know a simple inspection would have told me.

I can appreciate where you are coming from.

It's all good. I was mostly commenting on how dealers like to rip people off for this service not that everyone should do it themselves.

In Canada, we have this chain of automotive & hardware stores called Canadian Tire and everyone just does their car maintenance in their parking lot. Doing your first CT parking lot oil change is a rite of passage for young Canadian drivers.

it sounds high but if you compare edmund's true cost to own on the tsx, they base it on 15k/yr. over 75k it's a little over 4 cents/mile maintenance. $600/30k miles is only 2 cents but i don't know how much you already spend on maintenance before the 30k.

Okay, I'm lost on two parts of this: clean brakes? you needed rear brake pads after 30k miles? This sounds fucked up. They charged you for a can of "brake cleaner" and did what with it? You don't clean brakes. They are in need of service when either: your pads have less than 10% material remaning or have differing ad depths from warped rotors), have warped rotors that could be resurfaced (or if they're screwed, replacement), fluid gets flushed if it gets too think over time (but after 1 year and 30k miles, that's not likely). I am so confused as to how you needed rear pads after this mileage. Normally, the front pads get replaced twice before the rears go once (being that the front brakes assume 75% of the braking responsibility). Spill some more details please. As a person that has worked for Honda/Acura for over 4 years (including as a service department rep until just recently for Acura), I am probably not the only one who is confused as to your additional servicing needs.

Everything else on the service performed seems normal for a 30k service (though the fuel injector cleaner isn't really needed yet...and most places will charge you additional labor for an injector flush, not just for the bottle).

Kurt, I am also experiencing more wear on the rear pads than on the front ones, though they are still very far away from needing to be serviced. I think they still have between 60-70% material left on.

I'm getting ready to take my car in for the 30k service as well. I need to make sure my dealer is going to have all of the necessary parts in stock before I take it in though as it always seems like he has to order something when I go in there.

I'll let you all know what happens. It'll probably be in a couple of weeks.

I just had the 30k done on my acura here in SD. I had then fax me an invoice of work before they did anything. Here's the breakdown:
  1. Change Engine Oil and replace Oil Filter
  2. Rotate Tires
  3. Inspect and Adjust Drive Belts
  4. Replace Cabin Dust and Pollen Filter
  5. Replace Engine Air Cleaner Element

I brought in my own Mobil1 and I'm running a K&N air filter, so that knocked some $$ off the cost.

Out the door it was $197

I think the service differs from dealership to dealership. Some have personal preference, some do the recomended service thats in the car manual.

It does vary from dealer to dealer.
Acura Dealer in Roslyn, NY - $550
Honda Dealer in Babylon, NY - $400
Acura Dealer in Bayshore, NY - $259

I went with the cheaper one and saved money but thought they did a shitty job servicing the car. I guess I got what I paid for...

Clean Fuel Injectors (1 Can Cleaner @ $4.95/can)..........$4.95
I wonder if they simply pour the can of cleaner in the gas tank? or they actually pulled the injectors out and used an injector cleaning machine to test spray patterns, volume and leakage like what injector cleaning should be?

I got my car back from the 30k a couple of weeks ago. It was $350 or something close to that. They really did not do that much, but they did rotate and balance the tires. That is where I felt the most change because my front tires were getting slick. It's about time for some replacements, but I think I will try to hold out until 2005 to get them. We will see though.
