2004 Rear Wheel Bearings

I found some older threads with references to changing wheel bearing but no mention of cost.

I am the original owner of a 2004 TSX with 70k miles on it and the rear bearings started humming a month ago and now they are too loud. The dealer confirmed that the noise is from the bearing but the quoted estimate for replacing them is $1100 $%@#%#%%^$%^

Is that reasonable? How hard of a job is it for a non-dealer mechanic shop? Do they need any special tools for the job, other than a press?

Is this not covered under warranty?

That is way too much for replacing wheel bearings. I have replaced them myself on my TL several months ago and have found the job to be fairly easy. I would suggest getting the whole hub/bearing assembly as it would be easier to replace without the need of having a press. They don't cost that much more, especially for the rear wheels anyways. You can do this job yourself and be done within an hour for both sides.

Take off your wheel and find a long breaker bar to take off the spindle nut and washer. Once you get that off, grab onto the hub/bearing assembly and pull it off the spindle. If it won't come off, give it a knock from the back with a rubber hammer and it should knock free. Put some grease onto the spindle and slide the new hub/bearing assembly back on. Replace the washer and put the spindle nut back on. Torque the spindle nut to the specified specs, put the indentation back onto the groove of the nut, wheel back on and you are done.

I have to concur. I replaced the rear wheel bearing on my '04 TSX about 1-1/2 years ago, and it wasn't too bad.

Not to hijack the thread, but the car is 7 (or 8) years old and is way past 50K miles.

yes it very easy job for most cars. the only problem would be having the correct tools. an air compressor always helps too.
