how do you get pictures that clear I though the D70 was supposed to get a good camera but all the pictures I ever take are really really noisy and its starting to piss me off. Now granit I dont know how to use the setting yet so I have been using full auto mode but even in full auto mode I would think the pictures would be better from such and expensive camera.

It might be kicking your ISO up to 400 when you use auto. Try selecing one of the manual modes and turning down the ISO to 100 and see if it's any better.

Just turn the dial to "A" , push the ISO button on the back and select the lowest it can go (ie. 100 or 200). Also check the menus to make sure that you're using the "large fine" jpeg mode.

Ok no shit I dont have a Euro-R but it is one of the closest on the site to looking like one so keep you have your own opinion good for you.

I have a Nikon D100 and the lowest ISO is 200.

I just read a review of the D70 last night and you're right, 200 is the lowest. However, the noise from ISO 200 is about the same as my 300D at ISO 100. Both cameras are good up to about ISO 400, but beyond that you get a fair amount of noise.

yeah i just tried the setting also and found that you can only go down to 200 went outside to my car real quick during lunch and snaped to pictures at 200 and I have to check them out now.

Cleaned it out now.

I still can't figure out why so many people in NA refer to the Rebel by its European/Japan name. Its as if all the reviews and info on the net are Euro only.

I think it's true Canon optics>Nikon optics. I have 50mm 1:1.4D on D100 and I don't think I have a picture as clear as Dan's. Or...maybe I should take some photography classes.

I used to call it the Rebel, but since the Rebel XT was released, it just makes it easier.

When I pick up a 1DMKII all the confusion will be gone.

Thats debatable. Even a Canon guy like myself can't make a blanket statement like Canon>Nikon or vice versa.

Too many variables to consider. You probly need classes.

I picked up a tripod for $25 CAD on sale. Not the best obviously but it does the job. And I don't even have an SLR

Photodo gave the 50 f1.4 Nikon lens a grade of 4.2 (out of 5). The canon equivalent 50 f1.4 got a 4.4. In other words, they're practically identical. I would say anything over a 3.8 is capable of taking sharp pics.

A tripod is definitely a must have. I use mine quite a bit.

I have a Manfrotto but I can't remember the model. Gitzo also makes awesome tripods. Whatever you decide on, try to get one with a ball head. The ball head just makes it super easy to set up and level your shots. If the ball head tripods are too expensive, try going for one with a removable 3-way head so you have the flexibility to upgrade down the road.

I used to have one by Velbon and the fluid/oil inside the head came out and made a mess.

Manfrotto/Gitzo > Velbon > no tripod

Most of the Velbon equipment carried by local shops is pretty low end but they do make some nicer stuff. The only line I'd consider from them is the Sherpa Pro series but they're $$$ and really, for the same money I'd just rather have a Manfrotto or Gitzo.

It's going to take a lot of shift knobs to get me there.

I played with an XT a couple weekends ago and I was pretty impressed by it. The feature set is very similar to the 20D. I found it a little small in my hands but it would be nice to carry on vacation.

Well i was going to go take some more pictures at the same location to see how the 200 ISO looked to compare but unfortunatly it is now raining. hopefully I will be able to some time this week though.

Thats quite a big jump in cameras Dan. I just sold my 300D and 10D. Im awaiting a new camera soon. Cameras are cameras however. Canon L Glass is beyond clear and crisp.

It appears to be an ISO issue.

Dont want to Hijack, but this was taking with a Canon EF 300 F2.8 (Touched up in photoshop, and it was a cloudy day which makes for unsaturated color)

Sounds like you guys are pretty serious digital photographers... just wondering what you guys think of a point-n-shoot dcam (with some manual settings) such as the Sony W1 with Carl Zeiss lens?

Not asking to compare to SLR/D-SLR, I know better than to put a compact cam against those... I just want to get a general feel of how you guys rank a camera like that

P+S are awesome, esp the tiny ones. DSLRS are heavy to carry, and sometimes just wouldnt want to deal with it. So I would usually take my P+S. I use a Canon S500. The Sony W1 looks good. I havent read any reviews. However, Im a huge Canon fan, and the Canon SD500 is a little bugger Ive had my eyes on. Cheers

The 300 f2.8 is a huge chunk-o-glass. Is it yours or did you borrow it?
What's your next body going to be now that your cams have been sold?

The W1 is very nice P&S. I think the closest Canon would be either the SD400 or the A95. I really liked my A70 when I had it. The AA size batteries were very convenient.
