Talking Painted Calipers

I had this caliper painting kit lying around in my garage for a while now and thought I'd go ahead and get it done. We have an Acura meet next Saturday and I wanted to have something done to show. Anyway, here's a few pics of my handy work.

I ended up putting four coats on, to make sure it was nice and red. Plus I wanted it to be thick and durable. Took about two hours or so to complete. It was nice having it up on the lift and having some pneumatic tools. Allowed me easy access and I also rotated the tires.
Glad to get it done.....

Thanks. It's a very easy mod. And cheap to boot. I think the kit was under $20. Takes a bit of time...a few hours. But very easy.

You did it with a brush didn't you? Looks too good to have been done with spray type paint.

i think if i were to do this (and i'm thinking about it) i'd do black. red is just too bright for how small our calipers are. red bbk though is sex.

Pneumatic tools? Please don't tell us you used an air gun to R&R wheels.

Nice paint job, and good decision going with multiple coats. It will make the appearance of rock chips less noticable.

Also I am envious of your garage facilities.

I did prep the surface using the caliper spray cleaner included in the Dupli-color kit and used an old tooth brush to scrub it. They weren't very dirty though. I ended up putting four good coats on it for durability.

The facilities are at a nearby Naval Air Station. I'm retired Navy and can use the facility. Cost is $4.00 an hour for the lift. $3.00 an hour for a stall. So not bad. They also have all the tools at no charge and a master machanic on hand to answer questions, give advise, etc. Just one of my military perks I take advantage of. There was another guy replacing is CV joints on his Civic.
Some times we do mod/meets here to help another member perform a mod. Helped one guy install coilovers and another with his rotors, brakes and SS break lines. It's fun.

Nice job, LoveMyTSX
I like the color choice, and the results look good. How long did you wait between coats? And did you remove the calipers before painting. (If you didn’t, how well do you think you did at getting paint in the nooks and crannies?)
I’ve been thinking about painting my ’04’s calipers for a long time -- too long, actually. I say that because, after four New England winters, the calipers have corroded significantly, some worse than others. In the places where the corrosion is most severe, the surface is pretty bumpy; I’m nearly positive that a wire brush wouldn’t be enough to smooth it out. Given that, I’m thinking that my window of opportunity for painting has probably closed. If any experts on caliper painting disagree, feel free to say so.

Well, I'm no expert on painting calipers, so couldn't really say if the window is closed. I'd say that if you get it down to bare metal you can paint. To answer your questions, as far as time between coats, the kits says 15 to 20 minutes. What I did was after putting a coat on one caliper, I'd go around and put a coat on all the others. By the time I got back to the first one the coat had dried and I'd put on the next one. Then go around again until all four coats were done. I used a brush, so as far as getting into the nooks and crannies, it was pretty easy. For the front one's I'd turn the wheel out to get better access behind the caliper. Since I had the car up on the lift, it was pretty easy to get to all areas.

Hope this helps.

mod is short for modified/modification. If it was modified to look/perform different from stock, then it has been modded.

Unless you use wax that changes the color of your car, it wouldn't be considered a mod.

That was sarcasm, I know that mod is short for modified/modification. Don't get me wrong I
think his calipers look good painted, I'm planning on painting mine. The thing is the slightest
thing that anyone here does to their car they call it a "mod". When me and my buddies were
into cars what was considered a modification was something oh say like putting on a set of headers, swapping out cams upgrading a suspension, a new intake. If one of us had said that
we just modified our car by painting the brake calipers, the rest of us would have fallen over
laughing.
