Chris_F's battery relocation.

I bought a new battery and decided to put it somewhere else. I'll be tucking the negative/positive cables as well when I get around to it.

I was going to make you guess the location but decided to buck the trend. We all know teasers are annoying anyway

Battery is a Deka ETX30L - the car cranks better than stock and it's a dry cell, hence the unorthodox orientation.

That's interesting, what is the deal with a dry cell battery. What is the advantage of having one, and why does it have to be mounted in this "unorthodox" location?

Dry cell = higher cranking amps, relatively longer amp hours for the size and can be found in smaller sizes/light weight.

It doesn't have to be mounted in a particular way. Unlike an acid filled battery which has to be orientated upright and in the engine bay or boot as it can leak fumes. A Dry cell is safe to have in the cabin.

^ I made sure there was enough slack to lift the battery out of the compartment if necessary.

Well, it has good cranking power for it's size (approx. 365 CCA vs 410 CCA stock). But I wouldn't call it enormous.

taken from the odyssey home page

I found this interesting

Cold Cranking Amps: For all the power, durability, and life of our technology, the cca ratings can seem disapointing. That's because the cca ratings are misunderstood. Odyssey batteries are SLI (starting, lighting and ignition), so if you are looking for a starting or reserve battery the cold cranking numbers can be irrelevant.

The "standard" cca test measures the output of a battery for 30 seconds of crank at 0 degrees with the ending voltage of the battery being 7.2v. Some companies use 15 or 20 seconds and some companies use 32 degrees which can make for better results.

A vehicles starter isn't designed to withstand 30 seconds of cranking so we feel the batteries starting power is more important. The Odyssey part numbers represent the 5 second cranking power of the battery.

The PC680 is rated at 680 amps for 5 seconds, 595 amps for 10 seconds, and 525 amps for 20 seconds. Cranking power is even higher for the first four seconds. Similar sized lead acid batteries are only rated at 180 - 220 amps.
In winter it's barely below 10*c (50*F) where I live... so despite the lower CCA the car tanks fewer cranks to start up. It's down from 4-5 to 3-4 (my previous battery was getting a bit old)

Fun plays a part in any modification and it's great seeing ppl's faces when I show them, but it also neatens up the engine bay (I plan on tucking a few wires here and there aswell) and takes 10kg away from the very front of the car.

Your idea is great but I find no reason for people to do this. Yes it saves a tad bit of weight but that tad bit of weight doesn't help.

Moving weight from the front to the center of the car is simply a side benefit - and despite how marginal every little bit does help. My primary aim for this little project was to neaten up the engine bay and make my car that little bit more unique (i don't use the center console anyway). Why put on a bodykit, a new grill or debadge the rear of the car? I happen to care about the general appearance of my engine bay aswell as the exterior

The stock battery that comes in the Accord Euro here in Australia is rated only at 300 CCA.

Very interesting. I would just be concerned with safety...any potential issues with this mounting location? Was there a reason you didn't mount the battery in the trunk?

The new vacant space is a perfect spot for a compact water-to-air intercooler setup.

I didn't know that... no wonder it seems a bit stronger.

Safety shouldn't be a problem, the battery is firmly secured and sealed so it doesn't leak fumes.

I decided against putting it in the boot because this way I don't have to drill holes in the car to mount it and my boot still retains 100% of its functionality.

Read post #24 re: location of the battery.

The accord euro has an in-dash storage bin - more than enough storage for small bits and pieces

Yes they do - it's the CL7.
Same intake works on both CL7 and CL9 - there's no difference whatsoever.
GruppeM is Japanese, so you need to think Honda, not Acura.
