x rpm's @ x mph
Can anyone tell me how many rpm's a 6-speed TSX pulls at 60 mph? 70? 80? I'm just courious if it's still high with a sixth gear.

at 70 mph, about 3200 rpm
at 60 mph, about 2600 at 80 mph, maybe 3500 i cruise to work at 72-75 mph, and average 30 mpg. so even though i'm turning 3200 rpm, i still get good mileage |
Thanks for the info man. Sounds like it still pulls some pretty high rpm's with the 6th gear. It's wierd, because my 88 Accord 5-speed turns about 3000 rpm @ 70 mph. 30mpg isn't bad for a car with that kinda power though.

yeah, the nice thing about being at a high rpm in 6th is that you don't have to downshift to accelerate. it will pull in 6th. if you need balls out acceleration, you need to downshift, but to increase 5-10 mph, just step on the gas, and it will go.

On a side note, I will let you know that the car won't pull much at all once you get to 100. If you wnt to even try to see how fast you'll go, you'll have to leave it in 5th. You can get there faster in 5th, and can reach the top speed in either 5th or 6th. 6th is just a highway cruising gear to save fuel. It's tall as hell. I've only gotten up to about 130, but it took a minute once I got to 100.

I know this is kinda of a stupid question, but what is a taller gear? I've never completely understood the ratios either.

Taller gear ratios mean that they would essentially have less acceleration. The closer the ratio, the quicker it goes. The higher the number, the taller the gear. Like I mentioned before, It helps fuel economy to have taller gears, but can affect acceleration. That's why the auto TSX gets better economy. It is SLOW compared to the 6-speed and gets better fuel economy.

For reference, my 5AT has been doing something like 2500 RPM at 60 MPH and maybe 2750 RPM at 80 MPH. It's a fantastic highway cruiser, but compared to some of the competition, a bit sluggish off the line.

Thanks Slats Edit: I guess I should mention this too. Taller gearing can also refer to axle ratio. A 3 to 1 axle ratio is taller than a 3.5 to 1 ratio. Again resulting in fewer rpms for a given speed and gear. |
