vtec isnt and on off system its always there but there are different stages of cam lobes on the same cam. at certain RPM's the car will switch from the conservative cam lobe to the more agressive one. Thus creating more hp and tq in the higher RPM's. It also allows the car to have a fatter tq curve if you look at my dyno u can see how its pretty close all the way across power band while hp continues to climb. The lil blip you see on the vtec dyno is the switch over point roughly on the tsx 6000 rpm. big power in little motors. the replacement for displacement is VTEC or iVTEC

VTEC kicks in around 6100 RPM's(kinda high). And its very hard to shift and keep the RPM level in the VTEC range.
