Retrofit RSX-S subwoofer for TSX?
The RSX Type-S has a BOSE subwoofer built to fit inside the spare wheel. I'm considering retrofitting this for the TSX. Has anyone tried it yet?

Won't you need an amp? Or is one built into the unit?
I want to say that I've seen generic aftermarket in-the-spare-wheel subs for sale before. I decided to do a quick search, and I can't find one, although, I do see a bunch of compact subs with 6" speakers.
Why not just get some sub-like 6x9s and add an amp? The only thing you have to worry about would be the clearance, if the 6x9s are too large.

How much does the OEM RSX-S subwoofer cost?
I'm wondering how good it will sound in the TSX, in a hatchback like the RSX subwoofers will sound louder since there is nothing to block the cabin and trunk.

Not worth it
I use to sell Acura's. The RSX sub in the spare tire was not very loud at all. Barely even knew that it was there. Most of my customers would replace it with a Bazooka unit. Not worth the time or trouble to put that in.

Any pics of the RSX with this installed?

I wouldn't bother with a factory sub unless it came with another amp that was pulling at least 300 watts RMS. Otherwise you won't even know its there unless you are listening to rap all day.

That said, I did buy one used for $25 and put it my S2000. With that car's trunk being so small I didn't want to take up any additional room but I wanted some bass. The RSX-S sub allowed me to add base without sacrificing any room -- and in the S2000 the unit is much closer to the driver/passenger (than the RSX) so it sounds more effective.

Why not put a real woofer or subwoofer in the spare tire area? That BOSE thing just plays one-note bass and it flops around when you really start putting a lot of power to it.

All that said, have you actually listened to the stock system in the TSX? I think it is pretty decent and not near as bad as some people around here try to make it seem.

So basically TSX has loosely the equivalent of a 12" driver (albeit a weak OEM one that's not getting a lot of power driving it). So that lone 6.5" woofer in the RSX-S setup is not going to overcome the much greater cone area of the TSX's low frequency drivers. You need to move a lot of air to produce the lower spectrum.
In fact, there are gains to be had by replacing the OEM 6x9 with better quality 6x9.

The sub in the RSX-S sounded like crap to me. I hated that stereo.
Now, having the 06 Si, that's another story. The sub sounds way better. If I'd have to pick between the two, I'd get the sub from the new Si.

One thing to note however, is that factory-Bose systems are not typical stereo systems that deliver analog signal over speaker wire.
The RSX sub actually has a built in sub-amplifier, but it receives its signal from the Bose head unit itself. The signal is digital and is not the same as your standard head unit.
This makes it virtually unusable without some serious knowledge of stereo systems.

Wow they're using class-D amplifiers in cars now? I guess it sorta makes sense. High Fidelity isn't really a big concern for cars, and they are efficient... especially for things like subwoofers.
