radar detectors...who has what?
do you guys use any? if so which work and which do not? i do 35 miles each way to work and @90mph it seems that it's more a question of when, rather then if i get pulled over...
thanks!
thanks!

Yes, I do use a radar detector. Escort Solo S2. It's cordless, so install is a snap, and it works very well. Also, as an added bonus, it matches the instrumentation of the TSX perfectly.

no radar here,,,,,if they want to get you. they turn it off and take a snap shot at ya. radar or laser detector will always be too late to help u out in those situations , it will help though, only if they have been there sitting and shooting radar to monitor all the car speed passing by, it will only help those situations.. and most of the time on freeway, they tail you...pace you to get speed..

I have a Valentine1 w/ concealed display. It's a great radar. The directional arrows are the key.
What Howard is saying is true though. Radars are not full proof. They just help at times, but if an officer wants to get you, then he will. I definitely Howards opinion. If I remember correctly he's LAPD.
Howard, how do you feel about the radars when you pull someone over and see one?

okok... back to topic
I don't have radar detector for exactly the same reasoning Howard listed. On top of that, I drive in city for the majority of time, so any radar detector would probably be tripping false alarms too much to be of any real use

I have the V1 with conceal display. Love the directional arrows and it's long range of detection. It works great on the freeway. However, it also picks up anything and everything in the city, especially near the malls. Sometimes it picks up 5 or 6 radars (automatic doors openers) from all different directions.

^^ IMO radars are nearly useless in the city. Way too many false alarms and around Cali most of the city cops seem to use Instant On technology. It might be different in other areas/states, but I don't know.
Here, radars are only really useful if you drive on the freeway a lot. In Calif many of the CHP leave their radars on all the time, so you can pick them up on Ka band fairly often. When my friends ask me if I think they should get a radar, I always ask them if they drive on the freeway a lot. I tell them that since I commute 50-60 miles on the freeway everyday, it makes sense for me, but it might not for them.

I kind of wonder if radar detectors give you a false sense of security. I've been doing fine for a long time now without one and it's not because I don't speed or go through speed traps, it's cause I pay attention. I've had a lot of close calls, but I catch it in time. Plus I know where the cops like to sit in my area.
PS. I'm gonna be SO pissed if I get a speeding ticket cause I wrote this...

I use an Escort 8500 X50. It saved me many of times, i used to deliver pizzas so i was always on the road and i only got pulled over three times, and all three cops didnt have their radar on. (Only one ticket) It was for underglow, im sooo stupid. Other than that it helped me a lot. I think it was a good buy. I had it hardwired because the stupid cord hung over the navi.

I have an older BEL 860 and it's in the glove compartment now. I've gotten to the point where I don't speed as much as I used to so I don't really need it. Plus, I don't feel like hardwiring it and I don't like having the "not an ashtray" compartment always open.

Have had a Valentine one since I have owned the car....don't speed a whole lot (compared to what? sez Eddie Harris...) but it has paid for itself several times over in reminding me to monitor when it goes bleedle-eedle-eedle....no tickets at all.
This a definite change from pre- V1 days, when I could count on about one every 18 months....unit has really good range.

Actually I put mine in the big L mode aka Advanced logic mode. It's suppose to filter out even more than the small L mode. I still get falses from the automatic door openers on groceries/stores etc.
If I put mine in A mode or little L mode I get even more falses.

Bel RX 65. - $225 off eBay.
Cheaper than the V1 and based on all the latest tests the Bel and Escort and V1 are now on a level playing field. It works very well and is easy to use.

I have it set to big L with X band disabled. The arrows are the best thing I like about the V1. When I was using my Bel, I had to slow down every time the thing goes off. Since the arrows tell you where the radar is coming from, sometimes I would drive even faster to move myself outside of the radar range. The signal strength tells you it's getting weaker, weaker and gone.

Usually in "A' mode...
Does it work? Nothing is perfect, but within the last few months, I've TWICE had the experience of watching in my rear view mirror the spectacle of a car that I had just passed getting pulled over. Over the last 22 years I've gotten 2 tickets while using a detector, and figure I've escaped about 2,986,582 times.

Hardwired V1 1.8 plus a K40 laser jammer.
I keep the V1 in L. Fuck all the other detectors out there. You learn to love the arrows about as much as you love driving fast.

Bob, aren't you supposed to mount the radar higher on the windshield? I thought mounting it too low would decrease it's range and mess with the radar... correct me if I'm wrong. Btw, Kurt how much was the hardwired V1 + K40 jammer combo?

Drifting
I run a passport 8500. It's been ok for me so far. The thing is though, radar detectors only work if there are people up ahead of you being zapped. If you are caught ALONE in a speed trap. No radar detector will protect you.

Drives With Hands
Escort SR7 remote mounted with laser shifters.
RED is the SHF antenna. GREEN is the front laser detector/shifter:
I hate my front plate so much I took it off.
Rear laser detector/shifter:
Annunciator mounted on steering column. The "brain" is up under the dash.
I had a V1 before though, and that thing was awesome.
