My DIY Short Ram

With $8 worth of aluminum tubing and a $45 K&N filter, I made my own SRI by leaving the stock intake tube in place to accomodate the IAT and other sensor attachments. Throttle response is definitely better, the car pulls harder -- really complements the Hondata and header upgrades I did recently -- and it was about 75% cheaper than an AEM SRI or K&N Typhoon.

I'm planning on doing a full CAI using more of the same tubing (3.5" o.d. 6063 aluminum) and a couple 45-deg elbows. The entire stock intake is removed, including resonator, etc.

Nice Work
Just like the design of HKS Super High Flow Intake
Good One

nice work!

i think having a CAI setup with sharp 45 degree turns wouldn't be the best for air flow. If you going CAI mayaswell get the injen or something... they are only a couple of hundred arent they?

Thanks. Actually, the bends aren't sharp at all -- the choices are either 45-deg bends twice, or a 90-deg bend once, since the intake has to turn 90 degrees one way or the other. K&N's Typhoon looks like it turns 90 degrees, while Injen's RD1430 looks to have two 45-deg bends. The latter made more sense to me in terms of smooth airflow so that's the design I'm "copying". Also, in terms of high-rpm flow the DIY design is about 1/2" larger pipe than the aftermarket. It necks down to the smaller throttle body bore using the stock intake pipe's taper from 3.5"i.d. to, I think, about 2.75". The trade-off of a large pipe is that, for any given volume of air, the velocity of the intake air is slower but I think that is somewhat overcome as the larger volume of the 3.5" pipe accelerates as it goes through that taper and into the throttle body.

Of course, I'm a commodity trader so what do I know? You're right that the aftermarket CAI's are only $220-$250 -- I'm mostly just having fun with doing it myself. Kind of like changing my own oil . Thanks for the compliments!

sounds like you've really thought the design out - i'd be really interested to see how your DIY effort compares on the dyno to off the shelf stuff. Have you considered taking your current setup to the dyno?

Just an idea to maximize the effect on the SRI...

I have done a SRI on my other car and fabricated a heat shield and cold air inlet to draw fresh air in. They keep the temp down in that corner where the filter is. The angle of the inlet opening is important in drawing in fresh air.

Because the Jackson Racing SC setup seems to work better with a SRI. Additionally, the oil cooler lines kind of take up the space in the intake passage.

sorry so late in answering, been working on the cai version of this and forgot this thread. no harm to the car whatsoever. as many others have observed, it's louder at WOT but under any other conditions sounds pretty stock and certainly unobtrusive. i plan on heading over to the dyno sometime this week (as time allows). sure, if you guys want to pay for the dyno i'll be more than happy to oblige!

i converted this sri setup to full cai (pics in this thread) and it works very well, a little quieter than sri but deeper tone at wot. if possible, i want to dyno in both modes but that depends on how much time i want to spend removing and then reinstalling the filter.

either way, i'll post a cai dyno on az for sure.

The lude doesn't have the SC. It was on the Civic.

Yeah, realized that after I looked closer at the air tube and there wasn't the turn signal lamp there.

STILL... a nice little cart there!!
