Interesting stock intake and filter observance

I don't know if anyone else has taken apart the stock filter area and looked inside, but I did yesterday and noticed something odd. The intake from the outside air in the bottom and the intake into the engine in the top are almost right on top of one another. We have a big flat filter with alot of room, but the used area appears to be only a small oval. This small oval area was almost black (I live in a new construction area with a lot of dirt on the roads and in the air), but the rest of the filter looked brand new. Does this seem like a waste? Or at best, highly inefficient?

It seems like we might be able to get a better air flow by trimming some of he excess plastic inside the filter case. Even if it does not help the performance, maybe we can get a longer life out of the filters...

Any thoughts?
