Intake Air Bypass (IAB) valve
Does anyone know what this does? (#13 in the diagram below)
Is this the same part that Hondata mentioned was a carryover from the Accord version and no longer needed since we have DBW?
I know that for a while I had the outlet (#15) disconnected (on accident) and my idle was really high...
I imagine it has something to do with the intake air temp and engine coolant temp and something being bypassed.
Thanks for any help..

Under less than 131 F coolant temp, this valve should create a vacuum. Once you reach 131 F or greater, the vacuum should be zero. Its exact function prior to 131 F escapes me though.

Not sure why they screw around with a bypass rather than just using the throttle valve though.

I had an idle control valve on my '89 and 93 VW GTi 16v's and they failed fairly frequently (made by Bosch).

Switching to a synthetic oil would most definitely not totally eliminate the sound of a dry motor upon cold startup. However, the use of a good synthetic oil will help curb some of the wear that could occur during that time.

According to the manual, the IAB is a thermal valve which routes air from the intake to the injectors when the engine is cold. The open/close state is regulated by the coolant temp. It might be used to keep the engine from running too rich during warm up as the primary O2 sensor is not used in warm up cycle.

Is that in the service manual? I must have missed it. Thanks!
