free short shifter (allready installed on your car)
well, after trying the comptech piece..and not enjoying it much..(didnt feel smooth and crisp like oem) i decided to put the stock back on and try a lower shift knob.
i got the arc piece..which was very nice but something just didnt feel right about the shifting.
i noticed the lock nut under the oem shift knob, and decided to leave it off...
what do you know...it lowers the hieght of the shifter a pretty good amount...
and also..i believe the wieght of the knob acts like a counter wieght..and helps shifter feel balanced and crisp
give it a try.
ep-who learned another expensive lesson, somethings are better left alone!

Here is a thread I posted a little while ago about a homemade SS
http://www.acura-tsx.com/forums/show...=short+shifter
This worked out really well. It drastically lowered the knob since the skunk2 knob is threaded all the way through unlike the stocker. I have since taken the locknut and ground it all the way down (cut another 1/8 in off of it or so, just leaving the threaded part) and now the boot rests right up against the knob. Sits real low and shifts awesome due to the heavy weight of the skunk2 knob.

any insight on how you got it to line up without the nut? it is physically impossible to line up with just the knob with my shifter/boot. did you put the nut in under the boot?

Does the alignment of the shift pattern really matter? There are some shift knobs out there that don't even have them. A seasoned MT driver shouldn't really care.

Here is a pic after I rethreaded the shifter with a new knob and cranked it all the way down, but you can see how fat the locknut is. I cut everything off the nut except the threads, and it lowered it another 1/8" or so ffrom this pic. It is real low now.

Xizor/San-AnT...
Mine went back on straight --- I didn't use the locknut at all.. just screwed it back on, and used a rubber dishwashing glove to give me the grip I needed to give it a little extra turn. I'll take pics this weekend if you want... but I didn't do anything special to get it back on

it would bother me if the shift knob were not lined up right, especially if people in the car look down and say "hey, your shift knob is fucked up"

Personally I wouldn't want the shift knob to sit any lower... it's in a perfect spot as it is right now. Any lower and I'd feel I was reaching for it, slightly, and that would probably throw off the ergonomics that I really like about driving the 6MT in the TSX.
I got the Comptech SS and LOVE it. Keeps the stock knob at the same height but shortens the throws considerably.

There's alot of "some people's line up others don't", I was wondering, is it possible that the final alignment is dependant on the initial alignment of the knob when you start screwing it back on? If you start with it lined up, maybe it finishes one way, but if you started with it upside down, it would finish in another position?

no. only catches at one point and ends at one point. doesn't matter how i line it up, always ends up in the same spot. however, as i said before, i initially stopped turning it when it got tight, which resulted in an upside down sorta to the right side pattern. Once i overcame the fear of breaking something, i turned the holy crap out of it until it was straight and lined up.
