BBK - 1 pc vs 2 pc rotors

So I'm thinking about adding a BBK in the near future but I'm not sure about the differences between a 1-pc kit and a 2-pc kit . Can someone enlighten me as to the advantages of a 2-pc rotor over a 1-pc, and if it's worth the extra cash?

Also, for any of you BBK owners out there who live in multi-seasonal areas, what do you do when winter rolls around and you have to put on winter wheels/tires. I was looking to use my OEM wheels with winter tires, but as Audioserf reminded me, they definitely won't clear a BBK. Would I just have to find another set of cheap 17" winter wheels with a +45 offset or lower?

The only con of 2pc rotors would be the price.

PROS

- Lighter than 1pc rotors
- Aluminum hat w/ iron disc
- Cool more effectively due to less restrictive air flow
- Less prone to distortion/warping due to hat being separate from disc
- Hat can be reused so less cost on replacing rotors

Your only options for the winter would be to run spacers with your OEM wheels or buy another set of wheels that will clear the brakes.

How much of spacers would we need for OEM TSX wheels to clear a BBK, any ideas? Because I want to run BBK, but not if I have to swap my brakes out to put my OEM wheels back on for the winter...

i purchased a 2-pc racingbrake rotors and i regret it.. when braking its not smooth at all. my steering wheel vibrates worse than if i had OEM warped rotors..

i bought everything new, hawk pads, brake lines, etc.. i don't know if it's the pads or rotors but next time i will do more research before spending $1k on a rotor set.

It shouldn't vibrate, unless the rotor is wrapped, or problems on brake pad, it's definity NOT normal.

When you purchase your Hawk pads, did you get the one that FITS Tsx caliper? Or did you get one that's for your BBK caliper?

hm, sorry, just to make it clear, is your 2-pc RacingBrake rotor a OEM replacement and use stock caliper? Or a whole kit w/ new Caliper?

From everything I've seen, you need an 18" wheel to run a BBK. OEMs won't clear the caliper.

The vibration in your steering wheel could have been caused by not taking the proper break in procedures when you first intsalled your rotors & pads.

RacingBrake makes OEM replacement rotors which use the OEM calipers.

ROTORA offers a 1 pc BBK that is a 330X23MM disc that will work w/ 17" wheels. I believe the factory TSX wheel clears the 1pc BBK. The 2 pc disc does not require an 18" wheel either, but it will require a spacer w/ the OEM wheels.

OK, another question...what kind of temperature ranges will BBKs function properly? More specifically, could I potentially run into braking issues on a cold winter day? I would think it'd have more to do with brake pad choice (street vs. race), but I'm not certain...

ok my .02! first off, and this is for everyone who had a BBK and is an honest question, why do you need it? Does the TSX really generate enough power and speed to warrant the need for a BBK? It adds more rotating mass, you need to buy new wheels and/or spacers, and costs upwards of 1K and offers no real tangible performance gain on most all sport compacts. I have always heard more problems with a bbk than real value out of it. Plus, if you really feel you need more stopping power than you have now, why not just upgrade to slotted rotors that excelerate offers, some new pads, and SS brake lines???? Then you can keep your stockies for the winter, you don't need spacers, keep your calipers, and seems to offer more better pedal feel than stock and more stopping power for a fraction of the cost. can someone clear this up for me?

BBK advantages

1. Bling factor / Show points
2. some people track might need the extra power
3. some people feel safer with better brakes
4. some members have upgraded performance mods such as super charger. Sure, the Spoon calipers work well, but it's always cool to have a BBK

Larger disc = enlarged surface area for pad contact and heat dissipation
4 piston caliper vs 1 piston caliper - more leverage, more bite
Curved vanes on the BBK discs
Less prone to distortion

Interesting thread. I have BBK Performance Parts but I didn’t know those advantages. This boosts my interest on getting more detail through searching.

Ummm...you do know I meant a Big Brake Kit (BBK), not the company BBK!

If you were being facetious, then you should've put the text in red ...
