Air tight seal with K&N filter and Comptech Icebox

Oh, I'm with you on that. I'm just saying I have no idea how you got it on there, it was so tight I couldn't do it at all without removing it, and at that point it wasn't going back on.

Here are the pics. I cleaned my K&N filter yesterday and took these pics. The filter dried overnight and I reoiled it and reinstalled it today.
This is the K&N drop in filter after 10K miles.
Here is a closeup showing the dirt, hair, bugs, and other assorted items I cleaned out of it.
Here is the weatherstriping inside the Icebox lid. Its holding up pretty well. It doesn't look weathered anywhere, the seal to the Icebox surface is still holding strong. Almost looks like new. As you can see I decided to install it as one continuous piece instead of multiple pieces that would better run along the contour of the edge. I wanted to minimize the seams. Once the lid is on and tightened the weatherstrip compresses and creates an airtight seal.
Here is the bottom of the intake filterbox. Looks like I've collected a little dirt and sand over 10K miles. Cleaned it all up with a shop vac.

resurrecting this thread, do any of you icebox uses still have this setup? how is the weatherstrip holding? do you need to replace it? recently bought an icebox and k&n filter. planning to install once the weather gets warmer.

When I installed it, I did put the lid on and I looked through the outlet to the TB tube on the box to see if I could see any light.

doesn't sound like you guys have reaced this point yet, but does the seal come off cleanly? or do you need some goo gone to get rid of the tape if you replace it?

Ok i did this with my icebox and k&n filter...It is still loud, but definately not as loud as when I didnt have the weather seal. It is not as quiet as stock as some of you said...it kind of sounds like the original foam filter. So i'm guessing that it is sealed, but there is still VERY LITTLE air leaking in. My question is, will this little bit of air leaking in matter or mess up anything in the engine? I checked it outside with the filter on the air box lid and it seems to fit fine, looked through it and saw no light. I can't seem to fix it or seal it any better and I kinda like the low growl that it produces.

if i'm using a socket wrench to get the 'bitch bolt' out for my 07, do you think i can get it out with using a socket wrench with an extension (and how long of an extension is necessary?) by going through the wheel well? i'm trying to avoid removing the whole bumper and i don't have access through the fog light since 06/07's have them stock.

^^ you might also try undoing a few clips/bolts to get access from under the bumper. I recall I was able to get my hand in there that way, or at least see what I was doing.

it doesn't take that long time to take off the front bumper. i bet you can take off the bumper faster than getting through that inner bolt.

I'm finally going to install an icebox in my '04 5AT .. took me long enough!
What's the point of the K&N Filter over the Comptech unifoam? The comptech can be cleaned, oiled and reused just like the K&N, so what's the advantage? Is it just to quiet things down?

I've got another thread, where I had a poorly manufactured CT Ice box lid. I've since gotten a replacement Lid from CT, and it's much better quality. I put new weather strip around the lid. But I noticed light coming thru around the edge where the pipe enters the lid. There are 2 plastic 'rivets' on opposite sides used to attach the pipe to the lid. Has anyone dealt with this thin gap? Shouldn't that receive something like a caulk, or glue to stop air from entering around the pipe? I noticed the oe lid has the same, tiny gap.

Did this mod the other day. Worked out great. Everything seems quieter and there are no leaks.
Before, the top would fit on really loose. I was able to wiggle the top. Now it seams pretty secure.

My round 2 setup.
Traded my '05 tsx in '07 for TL-S and was out of Acura scene after trading TL for Infiniti in '09 until I bought '08 tsx again about 3 weeks ago.
CT-E (since comptech is gone..) Icebox with K&N filter again
Seems like kinks on the corner doesn't seal up real good with one continuous layer setup. So I cut them up and re-did them in my old way. Only did one layer this time and still doesn't feel its air tight. Maybe will have to double the layer later on.

just a heads up for people using foam filter with icebox.
make sure to take out the lower box as well and see it under light to see if they have tight seal.
my foam filter's outer black frame deformed under engine heat after about 30miles of use and i was able to see lights coming through the upper portion of the icebox.

long story short, i neglected the ct engineering's foam filter for a looong time without servicing it... alas, the car was feeling funny (literally like it was starving for oxygen) and that's when i had a eureka moment to check the filter. i'll post pics later. let me put it this way - the blue foam underside? completely black. also noticed the foam has a good size gash in the middle. BUT the gash is not all the way through; only the bottom. the lid side of the filter is still intact and the metal grate is holding up fine.
anyway, i moved recently so i can't for the life of me find the uni cleaner/oil so i put the oem filter back in with the comptech lid. it was really loud. so i checked it today and the "light" test shows the seal was less than perfect. reason is k&n filter and comptech foam filter is a flat panel, oem isn't. the oem was hitting the horn on the inside of the lid. so i cut just a tiny portion of the horn and now the oem filter sits perfectly and passes the "light" test.
i could be because i'm old - but i honestly don't remember the comptech foam filter being as loud as the oem filter when it was new...
oem filter may be another option to try for those adventurous enough. i'll be doing oil analysis on the next oil change to see how well it filters vs. foam filter...
