XM Coverage in Canada?

Did a search but couldn't find much.

As far as I know, XM is not offered in Canada. But of course there is some 'spillover' satellite coverage there.

My question: Does anyone know the limits of XM coverage in Canada?

I live in Ohio but spend many hours each month driving to and from the Greater Toronto Area via the 401, so this would be important to me.

As an afterthought, is XM going to be offered on the '05 Canadian TSX at all? I guess not. Is there a gray market like there was for with Sat. TV a couple years back?

I'd venture to guess that the the coverage in Canada is much more than just spill over. If it works at the border it will also work for probably at least another 50 miles on the other side of it. However since it's a digital signal - there's no gray area - once the signal gets weak - you'll just lose it.

You can easily get a signal in Toronto but the problem is that you would need some sort of bootlegged reciever because you can't buy the service here yet.

Ah, but in my case it would be a US vehicle, so no problem!!

Thanks for the info, Dan.

You're golden then. I know a guy who moved from the states and never cancelled his XM plan and it still works fine.

There are either 2 or 3 different groups trying to get permission right now from the Xenophobic, Liberal (ha) government agency - that is the CRTC to most people - to broadcast Sirius or XM or some Canadian combo of digital radio. I think that they (the clowns at the CRTC) will approve of something if only because they know you cannot keep technology from the people. Hundreds of thousands of Camadian homes have Directv or the other service offered in the USA. Since most people in Canada live close to the US border, there should be no problem getting reception. Edmonton on the other hand, may get frozen out (sorry for the pun).

What is the status of XM receivers in the 05's in Canada? People on this board say that in the 05's XM is 'standard'. I assume that means that the receiver is in the car and you just have to activate it. Do we assume that the receiver has been taken out of the 05's here in Canada, or is it possible that it is there and we just need to find a way to activate it? Or, if it has been removed, can we buy it online somewhere?

I have also been researching a BMW 3 series, and there is mucho info available about adding Sirius to those. Just order the receiver online and plug her in to the easily accessible plugs in the trunk, activate and away you go. Is the Acura so much different?

According to many reports, no problem getting XM in the Toronto area. However, in the city itself there are issues as the buildings block signals and there are no terrestrial repeaters.

(Note - if anyone is skeptical about coverage in Southern Canada, take a look at a map and notice the relative locations of Maine, Montreal, Toronto and Minnesota.)
