Word of caution in NY

I just heard in the news, LI and other states hit hard for catalytic converters thieves. One of the example FOX5 used is one of the LI Acura dealership..including TSX.

Watch where you park

I work in a Chevy dealership in Connecticut and just had to replace the cats on a van. The theives cut them out in his driveway while he was sleeping. After all was said and done it cost him about 1200 dollars.

I guess for some people, the economic stimulus check wasn't enough.

This is retarded. Good luck to those assholes getting a jack under my car though.

Lower is apparently safer!

i read an article about this in the news. it's not just limited to NY. it's everywhere. and it's ridiculous that people have to resort to robbing cats for the metals inside.

go recycle some soda and beer cans. or even better, get a real job.

That's been happening here in California as well.

they net alot of money when recycled. Toyota trucks seem to get their converters stolen the most. Portable GPS's are also stolen alot-heard that on the news.

ok...i could steal your valve stem covers, but what would that be worth?

My question is more about the worth of the catalytic converters and out of all parts inside and outside of a car, why they would steal that.

cats actually have small amounts of precious metals in them, which i'm assuming they're collecting over time and probably cashing them in some how.

Catalytic Converters have precious metals that thieves want. Those metals include platinum, palladium and rhodium, iron and nickel.

They're easier to steel off SUVs than cars because of the ground clearance. Thieves can just slip under, cut off the converter and leave in just a few minutes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalytic_converter

The wiki will tell you what the metals are used for. Interesting read.

It's been happening in our school campus parking lot too. Platinum is worth over $1900 per ounce! Some catalytic converters have 1/4 ounce of platinum in them, so it's easy money.

Those theives deserve to burn in hell though

Yeah, thanks to the economy my stock '99 Civic got jacked. It was 9 years old and I didn't think anyone would bother stealing a stock car, so I didn't have comprehensive. They stole it right when I needed it most...

This makes me want to go steal cats (not the pussy kind) if there's actually money involved. Don't worry, I'll put a test pipe for you.

Anybody know how much an SUV cat yields for scrap metal?

Getting rampant, target SUV because they don't have to jack up the car. Must sell at least $20...

Lenders delay foreclosing on houses, as vacant houses have the metals stripped before they can take possession. We are in Mad Max territory when junk is worth more than finished product
