Sedan
Wagon
Coupe/hartop convetible/targa forms
Lexus is HARD at work to make it the first car maker with a car with that capability (like the concerpt)
Engines
new 3.0 liter V-6
4.3 V-8 optional
IS 350 GT will offer the V-6 engine and hybrid power for 30MPG+ and 400hp.
Lexus promises an all out assualt on the 3-series, realizing it must offer different bodystyles and engine selections.
THe new 3 should debut around the same time. Should be quite a battle.

The production 3 series will debut at the Paris show in Sept, go in production in December, be available in Europe around 3/2005 and a few months later in NA. The coupe version of the 3 series will be the 4 series and come on line some time later.

...but even though the coupe version of the 3-Series becomes the 4-Series, the M3 stays the M3, and there will be no M2 coupe version of the 1-Series, they are going to revive the "M-1" moniker. Does this all make sense now?

Although the 3/4 series issue has been batted back and forth the latest poop I have heard is that the 4 series will NOT exist, though this runor has changed monthly for the last year.
Intro dates based on my latest info:
Introduction dates:
Sedan (E90) - IAA 2005
Wagon (E91) - Geneva 2006
Coupe (E92) - Paris 2006
Convertible (E93) - Detroit 2007
Engines for the world market:
316i, 122 HP
318i, 150 HP
320i, 177 PS
323i, 204 HP
325i, 231 HP
330i, 265 HP
330ti, 333 HP
M3, 401 HP
318d, 122 HP
320d, 163 HP
325d, 204 HP
330d, 238 HP
The USDM will probably only see the 2.5, 3.0, 3.0 turbo and the V8 M3 engine, it is also possible to see the diesel engines later in the production cycle if/when US diesel fuel gets cleaned up (sulpher).
Size will increase, weight will go down, MP3 and Ipod inputs, and a massive amount of high tech is planned for the new 3. With everyone aiming at the benchmark 3 it appears BMW is planning an all out assault to remain on top of the entry/lux feeding chain, time will tell but if the styling doesn't annoy it appears to be a winner.
