When do you change your power steering fluid?

Quick question. The Acura dealership told me to change my power steering fluid when my car is two years old. A mechanic told me not to change it until it's around 5 years old or so. So when do you change the fluid? I'm bringing my car into the dealership to have some warranty work done and I don't want them to use the "not changing the power steering fluid" as an excuse to not fix my car.

Technically there is no service schedule associated to the power steering fluid. This has been my complaint of just about every car company's planned service schedule.

My Prelude is 13 year old with 195k miles. I believe it still has the original PS fluid. Same for the 12 year old Toyota truck and 8 yr old Civic.

I change mine once a while.. basically I took Turkey Baster

Suck most of it out.. pour new ones in, drive around, and hopefully the fluid will circulate around and do it again...

it does get pretty dirty in there... wasn't sure if theres a different way to change it..

I believe the actual way to do it is to disconnect the PS fluid return hose at the resevoir, and have that aiming into a bucket. Don't get it on your paint. Then, with the car on (and on jackstands), have someone turn the wheel lock-to-lock, slowly, so the fluid pumps out of that return hose. As this is happening, add PS fluid (brake fluid, DOT3 I believe) to the resevoir, to "chase" the dirty fluid out. Its like a transfusion. Once the fluid coming out of the return hose is getting a lot clearer, reconnect the return hose, top off the resevoir, and then you should be good to go for a few more years at minimum.
