What should I expect to pay for brake pad install?

Acura wants $170 and that seems really high to me (I already bought F&R Axxis Ultimates, just need them put on). Anyone have an estimate of about where I should be looking for an install? Thanks for the help.

Just install them yourself. The front pads take about 10 minutes each and the rear pads probably should take you more than 20 minutes. You could do the whole thing in an hour and save yourself a lot of money.

Or, if you can find a reputable local shop, they shouldn't charge you more than an hour of labor to do it.

Well, if the normal cost of shop labor is the lower $40s, then they're saying it'll take 4 hours. I did rotors and pads in the front, then SS lines all around. Took me, not counting having to run for tools and supplies, about 4 hours (including a brake flushing and bunch of gawking at the Porsche GT Cup in the garage with me) and I had never done a brake job before. Their price sounds right for a shop, but if your rotors are fine and you have good mechanical skills, you could do it. Buy the service manual too, it will help with everything else down the line too.

By now you'd need to get the JDM version.

I've paid up to $90 for a pad and rotor change, but I DIY now. It takes me about an hour per axle, but that's because I have to do everything by hand and i take my time to make sure it's right.

for brakes and rotors that not bad... both obviosuly take longer. He's just talking about pads though, so that's a quick job for shops.

Yeah Acura said my rotors are warped a while back but someone in Parts & Performance said they were told the same thing and the Axxis Ultimates got rid of the shake in the steering without needing new rotors or resurfacing. I'm hoping I have the same luck so I don't have to replace the rotors. Thanks for the replys guys, I wish I could do it myself but I don't trust my mechanical ability and don't think I have the tools for the job (jack included). Maybe someday I'll have the guts to try some car maintenance.

$50-60 - Jack

$15-20 - jackstands

$15-20 - basic set of combination metric open and 6-pt boxend wrenches

$5 - 6" C-clamp

$60-70 - Helm manual

Sounds like you'd break-even with dealer price the first time and save every time thereafter.

Yikes... that seems high to me. But then again, I've been doing so much work myself on the car that maybe I've lost track.

If he's only changing the pads, he'll need to machine the rotors. You sure the price of $170 does not include the cost of machining the rotors?

It's a no no to slp on pads on existing rotors without machining them.

Funny, I do it all the time with no issues.

I just got back from Acura because I've been experiencing some brake squealing even without depressing the brake pedal.

I went in for a brake inspection which cost me $14.95
They said I need to replace my brake pads and resurface the rotors all the way around and also said the rear brakes are more in need of a replacement than the front (which I thought was weird).

As taken from my invoice:
"FRONT BRAKE PADS 3MM TO SENOR & REAR BRAKE PADS 2MM TO SENSOR"

They quoted me $410 for replacing the pads and resurfacing the rotors.

Last month my TSX had the rear pads replaced and the rotors machined at the local Acura dealer, and they charged me $179.

They told me that if I just replaced the rears alone it would run me $199.95 +tax

Where did you hear that? Scuff the rotor with some sand paper and no need to machine. This isn't new news either. We do it all the time at the track to go from track pads to street pads.

Sand them down and slap them on is all that is needed. This will also fix most brake shudder that folks here like to call warpage.

just for pads? that's a bit high... if you have any mechanical abilities, changing brake pads is fairly easy.

Break out the KY, because you're getting screwed.

FWIW, I'd check out the CarTalk.com website "mechani-X files" and look for well rated H/A mechanics in a 30 mile radius instead of the dealer if you can't DIY.

I wouldn't call it a big no no. It's just recommended and better for the pads bedding in if they have a fresh surface to start with.
