what to look for when picking up car

Hey all, I successfully convinced the wife that we didn't need an SUV for a 2nd car (got no kids, just 1 dog), and that the TSX was THE car for us....so our '06 CGP/EB AT Navi arrived at the dealership today, and we're picking up the car from the dealer on Saturday (work too late to pick it up during the week).

I just wanted to see if any of you had tips of things to look out for when we pick up the car. I already told them not to drill a hole for the 3rd screw in the top of the front bumper for the license plate (I'll check again anyway), and I know to check under the front bumper for scratches. Anything else you can think of?

Thanks guys, can't wait for Saturday....

ask them to turn on the heater with both of you in the car, and then say, "what's that burning smell?"

Congrats and welcome to the forum.

Like waterrockets said, check the tank. Maybe walk around the car and make sure there are no big scratches or chips or anything like that. Thats all I can think of.

1) Check both the End Links behind the rear wheels. Mine was broken from day one without me knowing that one of them was broken.

It was $30 buck a piece.

The end link is a piece of very tiny metal bar that looks like a dumb bell... Like this:

O----O

2) All our cars have fog up head light. So...

Make sure they activated driver recognition in your keyfobs; it'll take you awhile to figure out what's wrong if the dealer forgets, like mine did.

Or just do it yourself: Press and hold the 'lock' and 'unlock' buttons at the same time. You want to see the little red light on the fob shine for a few seconds without blinking. If it does, driver rec is on, and you're done. If the little red light flashes twice, driver rec is off, so hold both buttons again for a moment and this time you should see a brief, solid glow from the light.

And congratulations!!

Be sure to check out the job they did on removing all the protective plastic inside and outside the car.

Sometimes they botch the job and you will have little pieces stuck in the plastic that are a pain to remove.

Check for the bits of protective plastic covering.

And make sure they did NOT drill a hole in the front bumper if your state requires a front plate.

I did have that on my car. Poor rush job.

The other thing was scratches. I had ordered a black TSX. When they had me all signed up and ready to drive away, I did the all important walk around. A must IMO.

There were tons of surface scratches. I had to g oback 2 times and they couldnt buff them out. In fact, the detailer guy cut more scratches and burnt up part of the rain gutter black rubber by the doors.

I made them give me a new TSX....silver this time. Shame, I liked the black. Still, silver is much cleaner looking and can see the scratches less.

Make sure the dealer checks the tire pressure. Hondas are notorious for overinflating the tires---40 lbs when I got my TSX and my 2004 Accord V6 coupe.

I made the dealer replace a wheel the day after my purchase. Luckily, I took delivery of the TSX at night and the dealer did not put up much of a fight on the replacement.

I couldn't figure out what it was, but now I see it. It looked like blue and silver plastic at first.

They are shipped overinflated so that they don't flatspot while in transit.

Boy, this thread woulda be nice 1.5 months ago. That hole bugs me so much. Still hoping the dealer will get a new RBP in and swap the bumper for me.

Don't let the dealer put any decals on the car.....stickers, plastic decals, whatever.

Check the plastic on everything....we found a little piece still on the back seat...

and these:

So why don't they adjust to the correct inflation?

The dealer should do it. Sometimes they forget. That's why it was mentioned in this thread, to check.

Thanks a bunch for the info, guys. BradyKP, your story about the hole in your bumper is what made me start this thread, I'm pretty paranoid about this stuff as well. I figured there had to be more stuff that people noticed that I should look out for.

Unfortunately it's supposed to rain on Saturday when we pick the car up, but hopefully we'll still be able to catch any scratches/excess plastic...

Check for fingerprints on the inside of the car where the A-pilar is. I was in a rush to pick my 05 up and noticed gray smudges on the A-pilar on the way home. Looks like when they were washing the car, someone used the A-pilar to hang onto with their dirty hands when they were wiping the outside of the windshield. I went back to get it cleaned after driving 2 mi.

Check headlamps for scratches.
Look down the side of the car for more scratches.
Check sunroof needs to open and close securely.
Rear fold down seats need to work.
Make sure they left you the security lug nut remover.
Test 8way memory seat on driver and 4way on passenger
Crank music and look for any evident rattling at low volume
Open and close all doors (don't enter car) listen for rattling from loose material
Kick tires
Open hood and look "knowingly" at inside
Check all fluid levels
Protective film removed properly
ABSOLUTELY NO SWIRL MARKS SHOULD EXIST ON PAINT!
Look at rear window for signs of condensation on inside
Ask for some freebies (I shoulda done this)

Drive off with a big smile and lay some rubber

by the time you're inspecting the car, you've already paid. ask for freebies before this.

maybe ask four a bottle of touch-up paint?

where is the lug nut remover by the way?

Yah. As I related my story to others, they also were shocked that the dealer gave me another car. That's just the short story. The real deal was more complex. I had to go back and forth with them. The sales guy said the sales mgr had to work it out. When I talked the sales mgr, he was inspecting the car and kept saying 'we can buff this out'. This was after his guy already tried it and fooked my car up even more. I finally convinced him to give me a new car. The next day the sales guy was like.. how can he do that? He's not supposed to give you a new car.

I guess I got lucky, or I'm just that good. ... it's luck I'm sure. lol
