VW Jetta beats the TSX according to Smartmoney.com
Has anyone else seen this article?
http://www.smartmoney.com/autos/newc...ory=august2005
Seriously, how can one compare two cars in completely different categories, and then pick the entry level model (aka, cheaper) as the winner?

The new Jetta is a thoughtfully designed car that represents a solid bargain among European compact sedans. It offers an impressive list of features for less money than the Acura TSX.

Well, they acutally awarded the TSX as the best-budget under 35k in 2004.
ref: acura.com/tsx/accolades.
In any case, a similarly (term used very loosely here) equipped Jetta is about 27k. How is this a bargain?

You can't bash every article that puts down the TSX. With the amount of new Jettas I see around my town/area, I say people are agreeing with the article.
Of course I believer the TSX is more of a bargain, it's actually the deal of the decade. But at the same time, I give credit to the new Jetta (although I don't like the design).

Smartmoney who?
You cant compare the Jetta, I would compare the Passat more so. If the Jetta comes as loaded with options as the TSX comes stock that shit would be the same price. Yet you have German vs Japanese reliability (HMMM wonder which one is better) and then exterior and interior styling is no call. I just was in the new Jetta 3 days ago. No spank you.
Our car is the best bargain for the high 20's.
The best bargain for the low 20's is the Scion TC

VW=Honda
Audi=Acura
VW<Acura>Honda
VWs are 4 people who cant afford Audis.
Hondas are 4 people who cant afford Acuras.
Acura > VW
p.s. the whole affording issue is a joke. Some people who have Hondas and VWs can afford Acuras & Audis

Don't be bashing Jettas. My previous model Jetta ran 50k miles with no major problems whatsoever. Fit and finish were great too with that solid german door slam. For its price, a fully loaded Jetta had quite a good amount of features, probably similar to a non navi TSX. I'm sure the new Jetta's are even more improved over my previous model one, though it looks like someone took an ugly stick to it. Smartmoney probably chooses the Jetta because its cheaper and offers similar features. Yes the TSX is sportier and looks better, but probably something that smartmoney cares less about than us car enthusiasts. Why are you guys bashing the Jetta's reliability? Have any of you guys actually owned one? Seems like you guys are just annoyed that it was picked ahead of the TSX. IMO, a fully loaded Jetta is in the same class as a non-navi TSX...which is why I upgraded to my current TL.

I've never seen the words reliable and VW much less Jetta used in the same sentence before.
My beef with the new Jetta isn't reliability though. afterall, its new so we have no idea how reliable or unreliable it will be. I have issue with its 27--28K US pricetage once optioned out.

I would say about half of those who purchase a car "choose" out of preference rather than price.
Well, a review is a review and people will agree or disagree with the author. At least it appears he actually drove all the cars, as opposed to some real morons who paraphrase other's reviews.

I would just say that Acura offers 2 cars (entry level) that are less expensive than BMW/Infiniti's entry level cars. And I wouldnt compare (looks, prices, options) of those 2 (the RSX and the TSX) to any of the BMW cars or the Infinitis. Acuras next car, the TL, is what is compared the BMW 3 series and Infiniti G series. Then, the RL, compares to BMW 5 series and Infiniti M series. While the Acura MDX compares with the Infiniti FX and BMW X3. Thats how I feel anyway

Here is the entire Jetta portion of the article:
VW Jetta 2.5
The Jetta's 2.5-liter five-cylinder is rated at just 150 hp. But the Jetta's performance secret is the 170 pound-feet of torque that kick in at a low-revving 3,750 rpm, making the Jetta feel stronger pulling away from a stop than the Acura.
On the road, the Jetta's handling is crisp and precise; the suspension and chassis isolate the driver from bumps and keep the car firmly planted. The Jetta's cabin is not as quiet as the Acura's, but the difference is a modest amount of wind noise at highway speed.
The layout of controls is simple and logical — in contrast to certain other German sedans. The Jetta has numerous touches — such as wipers that automatically activate when drops hit the windshield and, in the trunk, a laptop-size storage cubby equipped with a power outlet for recharging your computer while you drive — that come as delightful surprises in a midprice car.
You can get a Jetta with a five-speed manual or, for $1,075 more, a six-speed automatic. Fuel efficiency with either is rated at 22 mpg city, 30 highway, for the gasoline engine. A 1.9-liter turbo diesel with automatic, rated at 35 mpg city and 42 highway, starts at $23,035.
The new Jetta is a thoughtfully designed car that represents a solid bargain among European compact sedans. It offers an impressive list of features for less money than the Acura TSX. But potential buyers need VW to prove that its quality sins are behind it. That argues for waiting a few months — even though VW is already offering low-rate financing and special leases.

yes that's very nice but the TSX still gets to 60 mph in 7.x sec while the Jetta arrives in 9.x secs. The handling has gotta be inferior as well, although VW interiors are always well done for the price. At any rate this is an apples to oranges comparo. We really should wait until the Jetta gets the turbo engine for a more reasonable comparison.
And I agree, the new Jetta's styling has been 'Corollacized'

What Would Don Draper Do?
i went to a vw dealership a few weeks ago because my girlfriend was interested in buying a jetta. we test drove a decked out jetta, which was like $27k, with the sales guy, and he mentioned that vw was going to release a 300+ hp jetta.
anyone heard of that? i thought he was kidding at first, but i looked at him, and he was dead serious. (though now i question, why would he say that if he wasn't serious? haha)

i dont like the name "Jetta" Thats enought to keep me away from a car. "Hey guys, you like my new Jetta" Doesnt work for me. as far as the styling.. the older model was nicer looking. VW has been trying to compete with the big dogs in the auto world. i.e. Toureg and Phaeton. Both of those are nice. but neither of them are named "Jetta" To me Jeta's are nice GIRLS cars. Much like the Solara and Corolla.
