Uh... shady question about Navi...

Theoretically speaking, of course, would a burned DVD work in the TSX's Navigation System? And again, theoretically, would that DVD need to be RAM, +R or -R?

Well, that sucks. I had a dream about picking up a loaner car and burning the newer DVD in its trunk.

As long as the software burnt on the DVD-R was setup for the navigation system, then yes, it will read it. You have to burn a DVD to get the navi-background mod working. Whether or not the 06 DVD will run on an 05 navi is another question. I say give it a try.

That has been answered by CJAMS and it's a no go. 06 disc in a 05 NAVI won't work.

Well, I'm not so much worried about the 06 navi as I am in an updated disc for my 05.

I wonder if anyone has even thought of just switching the DVD straight up. I doubt the dealerships even check until a customer complains.

Of course, now that you have mentioned it on this board, it may be too late to do a switcharoo....thanks a lot.

Wait a second. Are you guys saying that I can't update the maps in my '04 TSX? I was thinking in buying an update next year.

CJAMS did swap a 06 DVD unit from an Accord to a TSX and it worked. Search for the post somewhere.

I'm trying to get my salesman to throw in a 2006 Navi DVD with my 2005 TSX that I'm getting in a few days, I'll let you all know what happens with that and if he gives me one than I'll let you all know how it works and if there's any differences.

No, that's not what we're saying, you'll be able to update the maps by just buying a new updated DVD.

If you read my previous post and did a search for CJAMS post, a 06 DVD will not work on a 05 NAVI. It will say READ ERROR or some error message. CJAMS has tried it.

Lets clear this up.

for 04/05 there is a series of DVD upgrades.

for 06 it's a totally different series.

I understand now. I misinterpreted what the thread was saying.

But I'm still going to try for the free DVD.

Don't think of it as years. There are two different platforms. Orange disk and White disk.

2004-2005 model TSX use Orange disk.
2006 model TSX uses White disk.

There is a 2006 version of the Orange disk that will work in your 2004-2005 TSX. This is NOT the same as the 2006 version of the White disk. Unfortunately, the coverage on the 2006 White disk is MUCH better than the coverage on the 2006 Orange disk. I am very irritated about that as well.

You might find more info here: Videohelp.com . Check out the message forums. Chances are if it can be done, someone there will know how....

Bitsetting DVD-RAM

Has anyone tried backing up their DVD (getting a burned DVD to work) using some bitsetting techniques, such as through some hack firmware? I'm no tech genius, but I can set my NEC dvd writer to burn discs as DVD +R, -R, -ROM, -RAM easily enough. If its expecting a DVD-RAM, shouldn't the appropriate burner be able to handle this?

I'm a newbie here who's looking to purchase a TSX soon. If this works I'd be glad to help people in need, however I consider it a long shot that this is an original thought here

FYI, I believe the NAV DVD is aroung 7GB, so you atlleast would need a 8.7GB DVDR

Also, if the DVD could be burned you can get a refund if you bought it from the Acura estore:

DVD Software Return Policy

You may return the item within 30 days of delivery. Returned items are refunded at the original purchase price, plus applicable sales tax, in the original method of payment. Items must be in their original container and must not be damaged. Customers are responsible for returned freight.

DVD bitsetting
Safest bet would be going with a DL DVD+R, considering the above statement 7GB of data. My wild guess would be to bitset it to DVD-ROM, but take that with a grain of salt, since I don't know anything about the Nav DVD nor have one to play with.

Right. However, most drives won't be able to set booktype of dvd-ram without some hack firmware, which is usually fairly available. (Try CDFreaks or google it for your exact model). I'd like *someone* to try backing up a navi disc with this method.

This is all assuming the navi dvd unit is a -RAM unit and looking for a -RAM disc. This is what I have gathered from what I've read, but once again, I don't have one so i can't check. I'd be happy to walk someone through the process if they wanted to give it a go. You'll need a DL +R DL capable burner and some large capacity media, such as the Verbatim +R DLs, which can do 8.3gb without any overburn. Should be enough to backup the whole navi dvd.

Cheers.

Check out this thread on the TL forums\-
https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...hlight=torrent

boe_d has successfully burnt a backup DVD version 2.20, though he more or less signed a NDA on getting more info.

That old thread has been closed by a moderator so let's keep this within the legal realm of "we are backing up our own legit copies" and keep the rest in the hypothetical. However, in order for us to make a legit copy under fair-use laws and such, we need to understand why and how the current systems work.

I just bought an '04 TSX and I am just getting into the "research" phase for modding. One of the things I'm interested in doing is upgrading the navi DVD, but also perhaps adding to it so I can have extra content to POI and such, depending on the architecture. I am an electrical engineer, so I'm willing to take stuff apart and do what I can to make this happen. The stuff I'm not so good with are general car stuff, as I've tended to not be interested in cars so much before except to get from point A to point B. Funny how dropping over $25k on a car can alter interests.

I am walking out to my car right now and I'm going to start playing with the DVD.

Cheers,
inca

How would the coverage be any different? It seems like they both use the same NavTeq data.

Yes, it's still CE, but it's not the same architecture. No more Dreamcast processor.

You'd think so, but go look at the website and compare the coverage area between the 2005 Orange Disk (2004-2005 TSX) and the 2005 White Disk (2006 TSX). White Disk is FAR more comprehensive. The list of updates to the Orange Disk for 2005 are extremely meager.

I'm in Oklahoma, and the old Orange Disk that came with my 2005 TSX only has verified routing for the major metropolitan areas and the major highways, whereas the White Disk claims to have coverage for just about the entire state (including dinky little towns I've never even heard of.)

It's possible that the Orange Disk update includes the coverage area of the White Disk, but if so, they didn't say so on the website. If someone actually buys the 2005 Orange disk, please let us know if the maps have been updated more than what the website says. If so, I'd actually buy the update, but I'm not willing to fork over $185 if the maps in my area would be exactly the same as they are now.
