Thumbs up TSX is Lowest True Cost to Own - from Edmunds.com

I was browsing Edmunds and found this:

http://www.edmunds.com/reviews/tco/2....bestcars..6.*

Edmunds sicked a bunch of editors and data analysts on a bunch of data and they discovered that the TSX is the lowest true cost to own 2004 sedan for less than $35,000. I'd say thats a pretty good showing. Any comments?

Seems to me the price ranges are too wide to be meaningful. Presumably, the winner in the under 35K means lowest cost sedan between 25K and 35K. The winner is always going to be a sedan that's in the lower end of that range. A car that's 34K has no hope even if it's got a low cost of ownership (even though the info that it's got a low cost of ownership is useful to someone considering that car).

If they'd reported cost in addition to purchase cost, or did a comparison for cars between 25K and 30K, that might have been more interesting.

Did they factor in the latest results of the IIHS bumper tests?

I'm guessing no. But, they do factor in repair and maintenance costs which were known before and have not changed. Maybe once the IIHS bumper test results trickle down to higher insurance rates will it have an impact on the results.

"We started by gathering all of the necessary data, and then used our proprietary True Cost to OwnSM (TCOSM) algorithms to estimate the five-year cost of owning each new vehicle currently in the market. "

Ahhhhh. So it's based on their own "secret recipe"!

Difficult to give an opinion if they won't reveal the criteria and the weight they're giving each. I am also amazed that they gave the nod to a couple of Audis , Benzes and Volvos as low-cost vehicles! By 5 years/60,000 miles one should have the opportunity to experience non-warranty covered problems.

The Edmunds crew may not have met Ben Dover, the white-coated Mercedes service manager with the faux German accent.

(Or talked to the insurance underwriters who lost control of some bodily functions after they saw the film of that IIHS bumper test!)
