After reading all those posts, man I have to say there must be a hand full of rich kids around here, who drive brand new luxury cars as their fist car!!! I guess getting money is not an issue, and to have an expensive car to keep up the life style is equally important . And there are actually that many people who would recommend younger drivers to get luxury cars for its safety, handling and blah blah blah, as if any other (used) cars lack of such feature. Give me a break! My first car was an used Escort, then a Sentra, the Integra (new finally) and then this TSX (thought about the 330i though). To me, those advices are not that helpful at all. On the other hand, if your mom and pop are loaded, and can afford such spending, well then go ahead.

Sorry for all the negatives, I just can't help it.

Should've kept reading my post. I said NOT JUST expensive luxury cars have a good safety rating. And not to mention "Junior" didn't own his parent's car.

Once again I would like to Reiterate, that Im out 16 grand here for the car, not to mention an additional 2k, for when i scratched her up a little. Sucks that you had a POS car as your first car, uve done a good job in life obviously to move up from a Ford Escort to An Acura TSX, congrats.....but dont bitch and moan that some of us have this car as our first, Overall the TSX is a good car for a new driver, because of the reasons i listed plus many others, The TSX is a good car for almost any age group, and lets keep it at that, dosent matter how some of these kids got there cars, I was gonna go shoot Jason when this thread came out, lol...

And lets think about this G55 @90 vs concrete wall, Honda Civic @90 vs Concrete wall, both have 5 star ratings, but whos walking away, and who am I dragging off in a Ambelence... you get what you pay for

dosent matter what the safety rating is, when your talking in sure sizes...ive been on calls when a 5 star car, got hit by a 3 star SUV, guess who was in better shape...

Ford Escort/ TSX....ill feal safer in my TSX, and if i had a kid, id rather him be safe then dead

Went to college (back in the dark ages) with a kid whose dad gave him his classic one-owner first year of production Ford Thunderbird in immaculate condition. The kid wrecked it. Totalled, scrap metal, shreds, pieces, parts all over the road. After his broken leg and broken arm healed, his mom gave him her classic Studebaker Avanti, one owner, immaculate condition. He wrecked that. Totalled, shredded interior, flipped and rolled, demolished to the bodyline. After that, they leased a Ford sedan for him and he coudn't understand why........................

My wife and I have deliberated on this topic, and we definitely agree that it's better for the kid to finance his/her own car, especially one like a TSX. It teaches independence, responsibility, and appreciation for money. Otherwise the kid may turn out to be a snob/preppie who has all a nice car/clothes b/c the parents are well off, not b/c he/she did anything to accumulate those measures of wealth.

That said, I wouldn't mind giving a kid like a beater car (say a 10-13 year old reliable honda/toyota) as say a college grad present just to give him/her started. Anything else better he/she would have to penny it up themselves. After seeing these new cars running around I'm sure he/she would vault themselves to a position to work more conscientiously so as to acquire such a nice vehicle on his/her behalf.
I like the way you think. It really annoys me when new drivers get brand new, uber-expensive cars. I cringe at the amount of damage they can do to one of those in just a year of bad driving.

No one is denying that there are responsible young people, but there are other cars out there that would make a good first car without stepping into luxury car territory. Take the VW GTI/Golf or Jetta, for example. They are decent cars, can be found readily on the used market, and make a good first car. Another good choice would be a Volvo S70/V70. Even the older Saabs are fairly good choices, safety wise.

All people are saying is that there are safe alternatives out there, as far as used cars go, without having to buy the newest, hippest, coolest car. And since you're paying for half of the car's cost, you understand that it is a serious financial burden to own a vehicle. This is the lesson more people would like to see conveyed. Primarily, we are talking about those kids who recieve the car as a gift, paid for outright, without so much as a second thought for the development of the kids' sense of monetary value.

I don't have much to add, though I wanted to mention that I am 16 and was "just handed" this car. I got the car about 3 months before my license so that I could learn to drive stick (you are probably horrified that I used this car to learn, but I've stalled under ten times in the 8 months I've had the car). I would have been perfectly happy if my parents gave me a ten year old car, but my mom is paranoid about my safety....so she asked me what was a good safe car, and I think I did pretty damn well. I drove a Lexus RX330 for my first couple months on my permit, so I am used to driving a car that my parents will spaz on me if mess it up. I am happy to say I have never even had any close calls.

My point was there is no need to go with an expensive car looking for safety. Most younger drivers (please note, I am not saying all but most to some) get luxury car is pretty much for the only reason - it's class, period! On the other hand, most part in driving, is not just drive safe, but also learn how to avoid idiot drivers on the street. If you took the MSF courses (which I did), you'll know how to look out to avoid accidents and cage drivers who might hit you, there for decrease the chance of having accidents. You might want to learn how to drive safe before considering a safer car since you could be the hazard to others on the road.

Hey man, as I also said, if you or your family can afford such thing without it being a drag, then lucky you. No sarcasm here.

yeah i know i thank god everyday that i dont have to drive that 1990 volvo 240 even though it was only a few months, but the whole thing was falling apart the trim on door, glove compartment door, fading paint, etc. It was probably because it was built in canada my dad has a 88 volvo and that thing has no problems at all mabe because it was built in sweeden.

lets not forget...if a kid gets this as a first car, it wont be the thing that makes him lose his sense of the value of money, chances are he lost it years ago because he is spoiled (or she, sorry girls)

Why is this thread still alive? People with money will get the car they want. People without will get something else.

It all comes down to how the parents feel. Some will think about safety first (large car/SUV), others cost (old Civic), and others give what kids want (anything). And some kids will have to work their ass out to buy a car.

Some things are so simple...
