Top Tier Gasoline?

http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers.html

read on this issue of car and driver, 8 companies, some in usa are ranked top tier gas. They did test, they being the car companies. honda. gm and so forth, go together and determined which one are the TOP NOTCH gas. Which will ensure least or no deposit on your engine, injector and cause less misfire.

Ive always used MOBILE..but damn. MOBILE did not make any of the top 8 ones. gonna change to chevron on my next fill up.

I've found that Chevron is smoother and a little less power as 76 is a little rougher, more power, and better mileage. I alternate between these two to get the best of both worlds... at least that seems to be the case around the Portland, OR area.

I'm from the happy land of QuikTrip, who were the first outlets to ever receive the Top Tier rating, so I've been hearing about this for a few years now. As for why ExxonMobil and others do not yet qualify, it comes down to standardization. It's kind of like ISO certifications in a way.

QuikTrip was the first because they've always had superior products and all of their outlets are corporate owned. In order to qualify for Top Tier, every single outlet must qualify. So if there's some hillbilly gas station in the backwoods that sells Exxon gas and they let water in the tank, don't stir properly, etc. - that will disqualify the entire brand from Top Tier. (Odds are that if the corporation doesn't provide good enough oversight to prevent events like that, then the problems are probably systemic.) A few months back, the only Top Tier brands listed at all were QuikTrip and Conoco/Philips66/76 (which are all the same company.) Glad to see a few more have joined the fold recently.

By the way, I use QuikTrip almost exclusively. Aside from having the best gas around, they also have the best and cleanest stores and by far the most professional employees of any retail chain of any type anywhere.

Holy dead thread, Batman! I'm resurrecting because I was cruising over the Acura Owners Link page, which has been revised since my last visit. On that page, it says the following:

FUEL FAQS

Are some gasolines better than others? What is "Top Tier Detergent Gasoline"?

In general, Acura recommends that you buy gasoline from high-volume, major name-brand stations.

To prevent the build up of deposits inside your engine and fuel system, it is important to choose fuels that contain effective detergent additives. The detergency of some US gasolines is insufficient to provide protection from such deposits. Acura recommends the use of "Top Tier Detergent Gasolines," where available. Gasoline brands with this designation meet new, voluntary standards and have demonstrated their ability to keep engines clean through a series of demanding tests. Significantly, Top Tier Detergent Gasoline does not contain MMT, a metallic additive that creates deposits in your engine and exhaust system; (see the MMT explanation below). Fuel brands that have achieved the Top Tier Detergent Gasoline designation can be identified through their marketing campaigns, and/or by fueling station signage.
