Question Thump sound from front of car

Every time I start the car when the engine is cooled down (eg overnight, afterwork etc), when the car reaches about 18km/hr, I can always hear a 'thump' sound seemingly coming from the bottom of the engine. Everything is fine otherwise so I thought I check to see if others are also experiencing this.

Thanks, rtyk.

Hey You know, I experience this too, i'm not sure at what speed but it's pretty low, so 18 KM sounds about riight. I notice that it's only when the AC is on when you start driving so I think it's related to that. Can anyone else confirm this? I thought it was just me.

it is the ABS resetting, search and you'll find a million posts on it.

If it's ABS related, why does it only thump when the AC is on in the car?

For you, its probably just the compressor kicking in. At a lower speed, you can hear it.

For the other guy, yea its the ABS...

Double compressor makes a thump

either that or his front sway bar might be upside down

Just did a quick search on "abs reset"...and didnt see a definitive answer.

Fyi, I am on a little bit of a slope so in the morning, I can let the car just roll to a certain speed w/o needing to give any gas. The sound is consistent whenever the car rolls to around 18km. And yes, it does sound like it is from under the driver's side floor. If you happen to have your clutch depressed, you can also feel it when you hear the sound.

I hear that noise all that time. Mines goes like this. I back up, shift to drive, accelerate, and clunk, and it goes away right then and there. Also, if I'm doing a three point turn or straighting up the car where I have to shift from drive to reverse a couple times, the noise is always there each time I put it in drive. I do not believe for me, that it's the abs resetting. I will get it checked out though when I take it in for service. I have an auto by the way.

That's normal. It's the ABS initializing. If you read the manual, your ABS engages at 10mph.

I experience the same thump when first starting the car in the morning. It comes from the front, seems like the center of the front area. Car is parked inclined on a driveway. AC is always left on auto when turning off the car and starting the car.

I assumed it was the fan or compressor kicking on. I was concerned because it was a pretty solid thump, I swore I felt it in the steering wheel, and on the floor board where my foot was resting.

I noticed when the car is warmed up already and started this does not occur. Also when the car is started cold, I hear/feel the thump. The first time I immediately turned off the car and inspected under it to look for the neighbors kittens. After making sure it wasnt any animals I restarted the car without hearing it again.

I would have to advise agaist that...your car will thank you if you turn it off (along with any other electrical components, such heated seats) before turning your car off

Kurt knows more than me...but i believe its the extra strain on the battery every time you start if the battery is starting all of the electrical components as well as the engine...

If I'm doing a three point turn, parallel park, or just going back and forth to straighten up the car, the noise is always there each time I shift to park and move forward. That is not 10mph. The noise I hear is more of a "thunk!" It has to be something else.
