Thinking about trading in my TSX for a s2000
I've been debating for a while this year whether I should keep or sell my TSX before the launch of the 08 models. I'm not in a real financial pinch, so I'm trying to gauge when is the best time to sell.
I was looking at KBB values and dealer trades, but want to get an idea of what my car is worth on a private sale in Chicago.
It's a 2004 CGP 6MT Non-Navi with 43,xxx miles. I'm reverting this car back to bone stock (I might leave the lip spoiler on, not that it'll do much for the price). I'd rate the interior a 97/100 and the exterior a 85/100. All my rims have scuffs and I have a dent in the truck by the "A" and a couple smaller dents on each side. (I might pay a dent wizard to fix them before I sell).
I've been thinking about picking up an S2000 to play around with for a couple years before getting another car. I'd love to have a fun car to drive. I rarely drive more than 1 other person around so a 2 seater is fine for me. Also my commute to work is less than 10 minutes. I've always wanted a Lotus Elise but don't think it'll be practical for me to get that car at this time. I maybe see a 2008 Supra down to road, but I can only wish the rumors were true.
Any comments are appreciated, be as candid as possible

s2k is an amazing car. very quick car, handles amazingly, for sure one fun car to drive.
have you driven one? i think youll be sold after you test drive one. whatyear did you plan on buying? imo 2000-2003 look better but 2004 and up have more torque. if you hate dbw dont get the 06-07 models.

I've taken a 2005 s2k out for a test drive and I love the car. It is pretty cramped, but my lifestyle right now doesn't call for a sedan.
Pretty much when buying the TSX it was between this car and a s2000. I chose the TSX due to it being more practical as a college student to drive friends around and bring home crap every year. I paid for the car in full when I bought it so it'll be an all cash deal, no loans to pay off.

S2000: HP: 237 @ 7800, Torque:162 @ 6800
With the lower weight of the S2000 (2850 versus 3250 or higher) it will feel like a rocket compared to the TSX.
I drove an S2000 when shopping coupes a couple of years ago. Very impressive, but the trunk was actually smaller (and with a harder to use shape) than the one in my wife's Miata. Part of my criteria was to be able to carry two people's luggage for a long trip - I ended up with a C6 Corvette coupe.
A convertible as a daily driver takes a different level of commitment, but is worth it when the weather cooperates.

Dude, I am in the same situation right now, but not trading it in for a s2k, but either a G35 Coupe or 350Z Roadster. Both manual of course. I would be taking a big hit financially since I have put in so much money, but I feel that its now or not for a damn long time.

After this past winter, I've only seen 2 days with bad snows. Lucky for me I live right off a major intersection so I can always ask a buddy to pick me up on the way to work (it's literally a 3 minutre detour).
Hopefully I can have a easy time putting the stock suspension back together as you did putting it in, I have a shop to work out of this weekend so hopefully it'll be easy to do with all the right tools!

DO IT!!! I recently got rid of one for a G35 for my wife...and I took over the TL pretty much...and neither car thrills me the same way the s2k did. The car is ridiculously fun, but seriously in winter time, as long as you know how to drive it then it's not so bad with winter tires. As tex929rr said, using it as a dd in different weather takes some love and commitment, but when the weather is in your favor, few cars are raw and simply fun to drive in that price range. Furthest I've went with it is from the Philadelphia area PA to Providence RI and it was not bad at all. Sketchy in the rain with summer tires if you drive it hard, but keep the revs like 4k and under and you are more or less driving a rwd civic convertible.

moda_way makes a great point. Chicago weather isn't exactly inviting during the winters and an S2000 isn't exactly a great car in the snow.
Additionally, are you financially prepared to handle the likely increase in insurance cost? Maintenance costs? Fuel costs?
All of these things should be considered before making the final decision.

Yikes
I had the pleasure of driving the S-2000 in Florida and was very impressed. Looks great, comfortable for a big man,[me] and the quality is top notch. But... Living in Chicago as you do. I would only have on if I had another vehile at my disposal. It is definitely not a 4 season auto. My TSX is also a 6 mt. I find that it is a blast to dive most of the time. I also have a 1990 Lebaron convertible with 69 K for my summer fun car. Did some mods on it and wow. You may perfer something else but the theory is the same..Stick with your TSX as a daily driver. Resale remains fairly high and pick up a fun car. It sounds like you know how to handle a wrench so buying an older neat car is a great project and a 2 or season blast to drive. The Thinker

I went from an 04 S2000 to a TSX. I'd go back in a heartbeat if I didn't have to drive inlaws around. If you have no restrictions for room, then I'd say go for it. its a very fun car for any season.

Three Wheelin'
I have an S2000. An 06 LBP. And about 2 months ago, I got a chance to play around with my buddies 2004 NBP TSX with Navi for jsut over a month whilst he was out of the country. I put about 1000 miles on it and drove it in various conditions, so I'm quite familiar with the vehicle. As for the S2000 - in the last 6 months I've put close to 10000 miles on it
All I can say is, if your a dedicated enthusiast, you'll truly appreciate the S2000. Its a fantastic car that I would honestly pay double the asking price for in a heartbeat. More than posting raw numbers, it tickles your senses in a manner that few other cars can. Its an extremely pure driving experience. However, the caveat of all this is that it will NEVER be the luxury cruiser that your TSX will be. The TSX is a great car, but is cannot match the S2000 for sheer driving pleasure or performance. Period.
If you've driven the car and feel that its a good fit for your lifestyle then by all means go for it. As for practicality - believe it or not, I've fit a BUNCH of stuff in the 5ish cubic foot trunk. I've taken this thing on 1000+ mile interstate trips and have had adequate space in the trunk for luggage for two, plus a bucket and assorted car wash items (yes, im a little anal about keeping it clean ). I once fit a microwave and a weeks worth of groceries in the trunk! Also made some home depot runs in this thing - 5 gallon bucket of paint and some 1 gallon cans fit just fine! believe me, with some creative packaging, you'll be fine!
As for the snow. Get snow tires. You put summer tires on a Hummer and its not going to move an inch. Most of the "talented" individuals who've wrecked their S2000s in the snow are those who drove on the stock summer tires in wintery conditions. We have a long time member on the s2ki forums who lives in Calgary, CA who daily drives his S2000 in the winter - there are some pics that show the snow completely covering his front bumper, but he didn't have any trouble. Tires make all the difference.

for a while i always thought for 30k+ i would get an evo/sti but after driving an s2k around its a really hard decision. the s2k is like no other car ive ever driven. the car reacts EXACTLY the way a car is supposed to. I dont know how to describe but i guess you could say you and the car are 1
