Synthetic Vs Gas Mileage?

ok.. is it my imagine or is it real with any scientific background. With my driving habit. and distance i cover everyday. on my 2001 CL Type S. i gas up every 5 days the most.. and with the TSX (18000 miles) i gas up every 7 days... and ever since i switch to Mobile 1 Full Syn... i have been having to gas up every 8 days.. for the last several cycles......i heard synthetic promotes gas mileage but never thought seriously about it cept for marketing schemes... but i am seeing this in my car.. if it continues like this. the gas i saved will pay for the extra synth $$ itself.. anyone know if im going crazy? or is this true...?

Hope its true, I'll be switching to Synthetic soon. You need to provide more data make your findings more conclusive.
How many miles do you get before you fill up?
If you have Navi, how long was the engine running since the last fill up.

And how does the above compare to what you were getting before you switched to synthetic?

i usually go 240-250 before i fill up.. not that its empty. but acura gas gauge tends to drop down faster. than other car. but at the time still retain lots of reserve in the tank... so im not running outta gas.
right now. i go 270-280 before gasing up. and the gas gauge is still near the same mark as when i gas up when i was 240-250 before.

i switched to mobile 1 at 15K miles.. im at 18100 miles now.. so have been getting better gas mileage since the last 2K miles.. and weather is actually getting hotter in Los Angeles.. not colder. so if anything. the temperature would have slight adverse effect on the gas mileage.. no other scientific data i can provide. this iss the best i can observe myself..

A fully synthetic oil can provide a small improvement in gas mileage -- but less than what properly inflated tires can provide. It reduces friction; especially in cold climates for the first few miles because the oil does not get thick when chilled. However, apparently all the synthetic oils, and perhaps the dino oils as well, have a tendency to increase viscosity with mileage. So, the benefit starts disappearing after a lot of miles -- I would say 10,000 miles should be consider the maximum useful life of a synthetic oil no matter what the manufacturer claims (Amsoil claims 25,000 miles -- and I imagine that the oil is much closer to a 50 weight oil than a 30 weight oil at 25,000 miles).

My current policy is to change the oil in my TSX at 10,000 miles if synthetic oil is used and 5,000 miles if dino oil is used. I fall in the severe category. And, I may alternate between the two using the GTX First Start. It is a dino oil that is fortified with esters (Redline oil uses an ester base) that, it is claimed, bonds to the metal and provides a protective film even when there is no oil present (i.e., until the oil, from the oil pump, starts flowing through the bearings). Or, I might just stay will Mobile 1.

It is my understanding that the Mobile 1 produced since 1995 is produced by a different, and less costly, process that Mobile 1 prior to 1995. Mobile 1, prior to 1995, claimed a service interval of 25,000 miles (the same as Amsoil today). Now, Mobile 1 says to follow the recommendation for the longest interval from the manufacturer of the car. In any case, I plan to change my synthetic oil after 10,000 miles; regardless of the brand name.

It makes sense, since extending the oil change interval on a car will likely void the manufacturer's warranty and since other brands are selling a fully synthetic oil that is less costly to produce than the original Mobile 1.
