Suggestions for car mp3 player & hookup but NOT an iPod
I've been using an iPod nano 2g and a belkin auto car charger kit for 3.5 years. The kit plugs into the cigarette power plug in the center console but also has 3.5mm headphone jack, volume control, and then the dock connector. the advantage of this is that it uses 1 cable for power and line level audio.
my iPod has now broken for the 2nd time by getting the whitescreen of death. i had it repaired once and the screen lasted 6mo and now it's busted again. the ipod crashed, i rebooted it, and it's back to white screen of death. so this is my first and last apple product.
do you guys have any suggestions on a simple mp3 player, probably an 8gb or so that's good for just sitting in my car? i'm also concerned about being able to find something similar to the belkin that ties the power and audio into one unit. i'm not having any luck finding anything.. it seems i may have to use something like this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16855996161), and have a 2nd wire going straight to the headphone jack on the replacement mp3 player which leaves 2 cables sticking out of the thing..

Only other player I would suggest is a Zune.
Maybe you just got a lemon of a player. I mean...3.5 years isn't bad. I had two iPods (different uses), and neither have gone bad on me. One of them is between 3-4 years old.
I agree it theoretically should've lasted longer.
I know you specifically say you don't intend to buy another iPod, but is it even possible to reconsider? I just say it for your sake. iPod's are going to be the most compatible MP3 players out there. Just a thought.
If you really don't want an iPod though, I'd suggest a Zune. Outside of that, I wouldn't know what else to recommend, and to be honest, I wouldn't expect any more life out of something other than an iPod or Zune.

i hear ya, this is what i was thinking as well.
i think i'm just going to use my droid as my mp3 player in my car. i always have it sitting in my cup holder anyway, so i'll just plug in the 3.5mm aux cable and call it a day.

I think you're writing Apple off pretty quickly. I understand the product ended up being more like a 'lemon', but if you harp on them, they aught to give you something new that works. If you could stick with them, the DICE kit is fantastic. Even if you don't want an apple product, the DICE kit still adds an AUX line to your car.
