Stupid VIN/Production question

Sorry for all the questions, my car is still 1.5-2 weeks out, and I'm getting impatient!

My question is, the last digits of my VIN are 32990, I assume this means mine is the 32,990th car produced. Am I incorrect in that assumption? I thought only ~15,000 were projected, and ~18,000 have been sold so far? Does this include international sales, and if so, shouldn't it be more?

Just curious, thanks for the help!

Yes, that's the current production numbers. The VIN is for US only.

15,000 was a US sales "goal" and nothing more. They sold just over 20K TSX's from April 03 throgh to March 04.

Does the count reset after each year (last 5 digits)?

Sure, but the letters up front change per local gov't regulations.

Example:

VINs with JH4CL95 should be TSX's with 6MT
VINs with JH4CL96 should be TSX's with 5AT

For the TSX, the 8th digit determines the navigation option. 8 is no navi; 9 is navi.

This means that for US TSX's, the first 8 digits must be one of:

JH4CL958
JH4CL959
JH4CL968
JH4CL969

Canadian owners, can you confirm that your VINs don't start with these 8 digits? If they do, I don't know how you'd distinguish the 10000th American TSX from the 10000th Canadian TSX.

Don't forget a number of them were destroyed in that train wreck. The VIN # is a poor representation of cars sold.

And to think the TSX was supposed to be a rare car on the road, it actually is, but would've more rare to stay at 15K.

But hey, Acura wins though of course, it's good to see the TSX selling well, I'm beginning to see more TSX's now, but the rarest TSX I have yet to see a lot of is Arctic blue on the road. I mean the first time I test drove the TSX was in Arctic blue, but I hardly see it, nor Meteor silver just once have I seen meteor silver on the road. Some mom with her small kid was driving it.

Before the end of 2004, you'll probably see the vin #'s in the 40,000 range.

Wow.

I took mine on 4/2 and it had just arrived at dealership.

5000 lower than yours. Oh and congrats, you'll love it!

Thanks tonyTSX, I've been looking for a VIN breakdown like that for a while.

Mine is in the 24k range. Picked it up middle of April but the car was already sitting at another dealership (don't know how long)
I too was convinced that the 15k/year was a carved in stone number but I looks that demand still dictates production.

Does anyone know how many Preludes (roughly) were sold per year ?

I kinda figured that they would build all they could sell....but I didn't think we'd be at double the projected ammount! I thought it might be closer to 20-22k/yr. Guess we picked a sweet ride.

So I read somewhere here that 2 sets of serial numbers are kept on the NA TSX. One for Canada and one for the US. If this is true what part of the vin (prior to the sequential serial numbers) constitutes enough of a difference to start a new count?

The last numbers of the VIN will reset to zero when the MY changes to 05 probably in Sept. The factory itself will change over to MY05 probably in late July. The order of 04 will probably be cut off with the July orders. Given the current trend I'd guess the finally tally for the US TSX production to be in the 40K range.

I think you guys are forgetting that MY04 TSXs started selling 4/03. Its now 8/04...thats 16 selling months 42,000 units/16 months. Those numbers are still alot higher than their projected goal of 15K units for a 8 month period 4/03-12/03. Note* 15K units was a goal, not a production limit.
