Speaker Preference for our TSX's... Need help deciding

So I went to best buy today and listened to their selection and was not impressed... I know its hard to listen to a speaker in an open room vs our 6? speakers in an enclosed space... so I'd like to get everyone's opinion on a nice budget speaker set up that exceeds the TSX's OEM speakers.

I'm looking to get the most bass out of the rear 6x9's without sacrificing much SQ. Will to pay some money to get this. I dont want to buy speakers only for them to be on par with the OEM ones i already have.

I really don't want to add an AMP, sub, or head unit. Our head units are decent aren't they? 45 watts per channel? I may consider putting in a small amp or use 6x9 subwoofers.

I mainly listen to Rock but like House and alittle bit of Rap.

Throw some ideas at me

everything is better, I know realize that after changing mine. The magnets are so small that there's no way they could produce quality sound

I replaced the four door 6" speakers with Infiniti 6012i (now 6022i). I compared many different ones and I really liked these, and they improved the sound quality in a profound way. I'm an Infiniti fan (have them in my house too), so maybe I'm biased. The DIY is here.

https://acurazine.com/forums/audio-video-electronics-navigation-22/alpine-type-s-speaker-upgrade-278849/

I also did a full Dynamat (actuall Raamatt) of all four doors as well, essentially turning the doors into sealed enclosures (almost....). The bass response out of the doors improved.

As for the 6x9s, I did read somewhere on the forum that some advise not bothering with that mod unless you are going to replace the amp. The stock amp does not put out enough power to drive a higher quality speaker. I don't know that from experience, that's just what I've read. I think the stock setup with the door upgrade does a decent job, but I don't drive the stereo that hard. The stocks won't go "thump" if that's what you are after, but then again I don't know if speakers alone will fix that because the limitation might be with the amp.

The door speakers were a joke. The magnet was the size of six quarters.

Check out the Audio forum in Off Topic too - lots of very good info there.

Yea the stock speakers was the first thing to go when I got mine. There is nothing "Premium" about it.

I don't consider my '05 TSX stock speakers to be "premium" but they sound pretty good for a stock system. I'll be interested in upgrading down the line, but did read things can take some modification to use standard sizes. Thanks for the link 1Louder, I'll be checking that out.

After reading that thread a few months ago, I was just looking at the infinity 6022i speakers as a worthwhile upgrade -- but they are apparently no longer made. I have not looked further since. Does anyone have any suggestions for good door speakers (that we know will fit without much trouble?)

Have you ever try the Focal speakers yet? That's what I got in my 05 TSX, its a little expensive but you'll love it. Go with the poly glass series or higher series, good luck

I've built several systems around Focal speakers. In my opinion, there's nothing better. I'd highly recommend them.

They'll require proper amplification to perform at their peak.

Can anyone confirm or deny that upgrading the 6x9's with the stock amp really improve anything?

Thanks for the suggestion on the Focal speakers...

I'll look into them. Upon first glance, it appears that they are component design rather than coax. Do you mount the tweeters elsewhere or use them to directly replace the dash tweeters?

Well, I removed the oem tweeters, tapped the speakers wires and put my focal tweeters in, fits perfect. You can't tell that I have a after market system just by looking at it.

I installed Alpine Type-Rs in my front doors, rear doors, and rear deck and am currently using the stock amp, with the exception of a aftermarket amp to my Alpine Type-R subs. I have to say I can barely notice a difference from the 6 X 9s. I will get a 2nd amp for the speakers only eventually though and hopefully it will make a big difference.

Thanks - that confirms what I've heard.

The Acura TSX stock sound system isn't as bad as people say they are. They are pretty good if not pretty decent. They wouldn't of course be the top of line compared to aftermarket products or higher level model of cars that cost over 50 grand. But for a 30K car; the sound system from the Acura TSX is good. But at the end of the day; I like to believe that no stock audio system is good. I mean if stock audio systems were good car companies won't profit as much and aftermarket systems would be useless. Bottom line; Acura TSX sound system pretty good.

2008 tsx speaker upgrade

I recently purchased a 2008 non navi tsx and felt the same way many. The factory speakers leave much to be desired. I did a bit of research to find the best upgrade keeping the head unit and speaker locations stock ie no drilling or brackets. Finally, I decided that since the head unit is made by pioneer and I've always liked their products to look into getting speakers by them. The solution i came up with was for the 6.5 door speakers (TS-A1674R) and (TS-A6964R) for the 6X9's. These speakers only need 35-40 watts to power them which works perfect with the stock amp and the sensitivity is 90 for the 6.5's, 91 for the 6X9's. It works great because it allows for more bass without much adjustment. With this setup I also did dynamat on the doors. I didn't replace the tweeters in the dash. To say this was an upgrade would be an understatement. I don't know if I would consider myself a car stereo audiophile but I am a music producer so I am very critical of sound quality. The first thing that I noticed is the clarity. I can't stress this enough. Absolutely no distortion. I can turn it up to 40 and everything is clear. The sound stage is definitely lifted up. Low end bass i.e. (808's) sound very good not boomy like the factory speakers. I didn't want to add a sub because I don't feel like people on the outside of your car should be forced to listen to your music (lol). My only pet peeve with the system is that the highs are a bit pronounced so i keep the treble at 0 or -1 and it fixes the problem. In my opinion this is the most cost effective and best sounding system for this car and best of all i bought everything at best buy so no wait time. I listen to all types of music and this setup makes everything sound good even FM radio (which i hate). If you do this setup make sure to dynamat because i listened to the speakers with and without it and there is a night and day difference. Hope this helps.

^ Thanks for the write-up! Did you need a wire adapter for the rear 6x9's? Also, did you use a DIY link from here? Thanks -

Yes I got the speaker adapters from best buy as well. The hardest part was using the stock speaker mounts for the 6.5. It involved a lot of cutting and glue. If I were to do it again I would use zip ties to joint them.

You definitely need a subwoofer amp, and full range signal (so you can set the response with the new amp's crossover NOT the oem amp's crossover). It's better to get something designed to be a sub (which is hard to find) than trying to get bass out of a full range speaker. I finally ended up with tang band 6x9's from parts express, infinity kappa perfect's, a kappa five amp and an Ms8 under the front passenger seat, then it sounded good!
