Taxes or tags? Usually sales taxes are due at the time of purchase and mine came to over $2000 dollars. Unless you are paying 1% sales tax in NC I am assuming you are talking about your registration. If you are, you still didn't pay that much. My registration was $540 and change this year.

We have yearly car taxes in VA (in addition to time of purchase taxes), mine was ~$500 last year. Its based on the value of your car, so expect to pay a lot for a new car.

well, if his trade in value was close to the price of the car, he would only have to pay taxes on the difference. which may be one explanation for the small amount.

Sales tax for the city of Denver is like 8.2% or something in that neighborhood. Plus I didn't trade anything in, I sold my car myself and got lots more for it. The yearly registration for the 1st year I think is 1.5% plus fees for maintaining highways and roads which came to roughly $540. Yearly registration goes to the county mostly and is used to improve the highway system and public transportation.

It's outrageous that some states charge veh. taxes like MA. NY is a blue-state commie hell hole, but at least they don't screw us with another tax like that! 2 year reg. runs only about $70. Yearly inspections are a PITA and a racket though... still only $10 each time.

Cook County IL: 7.75%
Lake County IL: 6.5%
You get to add 1% to those if you live within the city limits of Chicago. Here's the trick tho, if you live in cook couny, buy a car outside cook county, you then get a tax bill in the mail from cook county, but its only .75%, so you still end up ahead of the game, 8.25% total tax(I live in the city) as opposed to the full 8.75% if you were to buy it at home.

You pay taxes of the city where you live. For example, if you buy a car out of state you will end up paying taxes for the city in which you are a resident. If you tell the dealer a wrong address you will have the tax man putting you in jail. Not really, but you will have some pretty big legal problems since it is a crime to avoid sales taxes that way. Just FYI.

$211 for tags, no additional taxes in CA after purchase
We have the Governator in CA... He reduced taxes by 66% on automobiles when he came in; thereafter increasing the deficit of the state by $4 billion per year. Pretty dumb, I think. He took out a loan to pay it off, and the interest alone will hurt us more than the 66% of additional car taxes.

Back on topic, I expect to pay around $250/yr here in CA. At least we get to write it off during tax time...

Instead, actually take the highway funds collected and STOP FUNDING MASS TRANSIT with them and put the back in the highways where they belong.
