"Secrets of that New-Car Smell"

Just thought this was interesting. An article in the latest C&D comments on the smell of the Acura TSX actually... the writer asks a wine connoiseur to smell a few random cars and asks him to comment on them, and this is what he said of the TSX: "Very one-dimensional, nothing lying underneath. Clean, pleasant, sterile, a touch of plastic." Also of the 2003 TL he says "Very faint, almost an absence of aromas. No leather smell at all. Light plastic or cleaner."

I dunno, I loved the smell of my car for the first few weeks... it was definitely intoxicating =)

Interesting. Japanese car smell doesn't last as long (not a problem for me) comparing to a european car (provided both with leather interior).

The "new car smell" is the smell of polymers used during production. It also has been linked to cancer. The US has cracked the whip... hence the less pronounced smells in newer cars.:bandito:

I always thought the new car smell was mostly glue, so that makes good sense. :)

How about this one:

A woman posted on this or the other site a couple of months ago that she decided to have her interior air filter changed because it was already dirty and when she did, viola she got the new car smell back.

It's all chemicals one way or the other (not leather). My wife couldn't stand it. Made her sick.

I wonder what he had to say when he sat in a new Korean car. From what I hear, they smell like old socks when "new."

I don't notice it, but my friends still comment on it, three months later.
