Is this right?

Hi,

I took my TSX in for its first oil change. I went to Acura of North Toronto

My car said A1, but I just wanted the oil change.

Acura charged me $60:

Part# PKTSXA (Maintenance "A") = $28
Labor = $30

I don't want to pay $60 for every oil change!! If that is right, does anybody know of a better place in Toronto to get this done?

Just do it yourself next time man. It is extremely easy.

I had a fellow member on here come to my house and show me, and now I do my own oil changes. If an 18 year old that had pretty much no car maintenance knowledge can do it, anyone can

yep. that right. i bought my car from north of toronto and they charge $50-60. i bring it to my mechanic $20. he's in woodbridge. he has been around for a very long time. not even worth doing it yourself when it cost only $20.

The original oil filter is extra tight. The $30 labor is probably just to remove the filter.

I live in Ohio, and it costs me $37 every time. I'm going to start doing it myself anyway though because I know its so easy. The only thing stopping me is that I don't know how to properly and safely dispose of the old oil. Also, should I flush it a few times every so many oil changes just to rinse the old residue out?

You don't need to flush it. And here in Portland, we dispose of used oil by just pouring it into a transparent container, and placing next to the garbage before it gets picked up in the morning.

Wow, I don't think I've ever heard of that before. Here in Florida we have to find an authorized disposal center. The Autozone used to take it in, but they stopped that years ago. Now that's really the only thing keeping me from doing it myself. I can take it to a shop, but they all charge a disposal fee. And by time I buy the oil and filter and pay the disposal fee, I've got a dealer oil change so there's no real point doing it myself.

For Toronto that seems about right. Most labor rates here are $80/hour now so if he charged you $30 for labor that's like 20 minutes of work or so. The oil + filter is probably the remainder of the cost.

Haven't been to an Acura dealer for an oil change in some time but Acura 2000 in Brampton used to charge me about $35 for dino oil and $70 for synthetic.

I'd say he's getting ripped off.

Yea, I would definitely consider DIY if it was $60.

Yeah I paid about the same at Sherway Acura. If anyone does know a good mechanic in the Toronto area I'd love to find out as well.

Doesn't the first A1 service also include a tire rotation? This could be the extra cost over a standard oil change.

BTW, Acura's A1 service does NOT call for an oil filter change, just the oil.

I find this just plain weird and a lame attempt by Acura to slyly keep the reported maintenance costs down.

Every Acura dealer I have been to ignores this and will also change the oil filter as well.
