Redline

Today while in the car with some friends I decide to put my car into M (5AT). I ALWAYS turn the music down in order to better adapt to the change in RPM so I don't go over 7,000. Well tonight my friend blasted the radio once, I made him turn it down. Again while driving, I made him turn it down. Now FYI I'm not an MT noob, but I feel I am not quite an expert, so I take the proper precautions at all times. Well he does it again while I'm in 1st and I feel that the car is around 6 when it really sounds like its at 7. I look at the tach and I see the car drop down to about 3-4 when I shift out of what my rear seat passenger said was 7200. It was not 7400 now that I think of it (along with the engine shut off, the tach didn't read that much into mid-7k. 7200 sounds just about right, in a car that redlines at 7100. Have I done too much? Many well-taught car guys I talk to say everything is ok as I caught it 200-300 rpm before 7400. I think I only went 100 over redline.

So the question stands, what are the consequences (I hope none), if any? Lesson learned, don't under estimate the engine and don't let your friends f' around with your radio when you feel comfortable driving without it when you want to. Any insight is very welcomed. BTW the car is driving normally, now that I think of it I didn't do too much, but I'm still quite worried. Thanks.

Thats what the rev limiter is for. So you dont screw up your engine.

The rev limiter doesnt always save your engine...
Let's say you mis-shift in a manual, going from 3rd gear to 4th, but accidentally shift it into 2nd, the rev limiter has no use for you or your engine at that point...

Oh yeah definately. But I was going up in 1st and ended the needle rise at 7200, only 100 above redline.

You shouldn't worry about anything bad happening to your car, it didn't go that deep into redline...
Think about the people who do redline shifts, or shifts right before fuel cutoff

LOL BELIEVE ME I KNOW, my cousin's GS-R is shifted at 9,000 rpm CASUALLY. Granted he has a SKUNK-II ECU upgrade, that's still a lot. He considers redline at 10,000. I've seen him do it, it sounds crazy but its true. He says that he has beaten z28's, 350z's, and s2000's but I doubt some of his info.

Anyway back on course, yeah thanks for the info. Now that I've calmed down a little I realized it wouldn't have been that bad, it isn't like Honda made it do-or-die. Besides the k24 engine has one of the fastest piston speeds in the world today (something like 10th fastest . I can pull that up if anyone is interested).

Yea...I would doubt it too, but you also have to consider if the person in the other car wants to run you and also how good of a driver/shifter they are...
No, granny shifters here...

just for whoever is interested from my source the K24A2 has the 9th fastest piston speed in the world, at 4615 ft./ min. The non-USDM S2000 has the fastest, 2nd Lamborghini Gallardo, 3rd is the Acura Integra-R. Kind of interesting.

Let me say that I've shifted in that area many times before, and nothing negative has resulted from it, well at least from my point of view, nothing has changed...

I take it to 7400 now and then, no problem at all. It pulls up and beyond that point.

I take it to redline every now and then and have no problems at all... Once I misshifted from 5th to 2nd, good thiung I clutched right before the tac hit 5400. I raced a couple guys on their bikes today... We all know who won that one

Probably trying to downshift from 5th to 4th, missed and hit 2nd instead. I've done it before it many cars.

That is the beauty of V-Tech. With an ordinary engine, redlining it often would hurt, but with V-tech, you can redline it and the wear is significantly reduced.

Uh... it's VTEC not V-Tech and although I love Honda's VTEC technology it annoys me when people exaggerate it with statements like above.

Since when did the Civic Type R gain a 9000 RPM redline ? I thought it was more along the K20A's.

VTEC has nothing to do with engine wear. VTEC is about ability to adjust between various cam profiles at different enginer speeds.

That was with the B16B's, back in the late 90's.

Needless to say, the engine never made it here...

No need to worry about hitting redline or even going over it. You drive an auto it is impossible to blow that engine up, short of a failure of the auto trannie or not putting oil in your car. By design you cannot downshift to too low of a gear, the trannies computer wont allow the shift to happen. But for those of you that use your left foot while driving, over-revving is an issue. It is very easy to put the shifter in the wrong gear, so becareful. A new K24 engine would be a very costly mistake to have to fix.
