Talking Oil Consumption Update

As previously posted, had to add about 3/4 of a quart after 1st 1400+ miles . . .oil level was near bottom dot on stick . . . .Just turned 3100 miles and figuted it was time to re-check . . . .This time . . .surprise, surprise, surprise . . NOT A DROP OF OIL USED . . . . 1st time may have been due to car not coming fully topped off . . . .And I am not driving the car any easier . . . .I wanna change my vote . . . .

Maybe the manual lets you push further into the VTEC high RPM zone where oil gets burnt. Syhthetic/Dino juice not making any difference.

Is it possible that the cylinder goes so fast or so high on the upstroke that oil just gets pushed out. Not a mechanical engineer but that sounds like a recipe for sludge to me.

Pretty unsatisfactory eitherway.

* I thought the diesel accord wasn't sold in NA.

I think crfortin is just about diesel engine in general, because "yes", there's no diesel accord for sale yet.

Yes, you vtec too little! When I have my Prelude, I vtec it everytime I have the chance! And I need to fill up 1L between every oil change (6000km). And you are lucky with your 325i since M54 are well known a oil burner too. Maybe it is 8L of oil, so it really doesn't matter if it burn 3L in 10000 km.

Also, it seems different oil will cause different result. On my Prelude, regular oil won't burn that much as sythetic and also different sythetic will lead to different result too. Currently, I lost 1/4L on my TSX with Motul after running 10000km and I also will vtec it if possible.

My car sees sustained speeds of 80mph or higher for 80 miles a day. It uses 1/2qt of any brand of oil every 5k miles. Not bad. I now have 35k miles on it. Runs great.

I have had to add oil to my used (purchased used) Hondas and Acuras (5 total)

I added oil to my race car often

I have an '04 with about 31000 miles on it, but it started burning oil around 25k miles. I broke the car in gently, and never went above 4000 rpms for the first 600 miles. I also didn't accelerate hard during this period. After 600 miles, I would rev it up higher and give it a bit more throttle, but nowhere near flooring it. I did this up until 1000 miles, and as I got closer to 1000 miles gradually starting increasing the amount of throttle and rpm's. Car was perfect up until 25k miles, and then suddenly started consuming about 1/4 qt / 500 miles. I'm currently in the process of doing an oil consumption test with the dealer (have gone 1000 miles so far). The first 500 miles of the test the car didn't use any oil, but then the next 500 miles it used 1/4 of a quart. I drove the car the same during both times (commute to work). Another 4000 miles or so to go for the oil consumption test... we'll see what happens.

I don't see any relationship between engine break-in and oil consumption after reading most of these threads. ??? Maybe it really doesn't make a difference?

Just a little update on this. I now have 48,000 miles on the car. It uses 1/2qt every 5,000 miles on any oil. Not too bad. As I said before the car averages 130 miles a day, all highway, @ 80mph +. With that said, I think it's pretty good.

Tell me how this makes sense? By their logic you can burn through the entire volume of oil before your scheduled oil changes and this falls into acceptable consumption? This will be my last Acura.

It's not normal. My TSX goes through the 6 month/7000mile interval without burning oil. I even brought it to the track once for 3 x 30 minute sessions and my oil level didn't drop at the end of the day.

I reckon it depends on the engine running in procedure.

Hard. Within the first 60 miles, I was pushing it up the hill in 2nd gear up to 50mph.

Later at around 300 miles, I misshifted and brought the engine to 7000rpm in 2nd. LOL.

04--A/T--28k+, no oil usage between changes at 5000 miles....south Texas heat and dust...use Mobil1 5-30w...kept Acura oil in first 5000....semi-easy break in...did not maintain one steady speed the first 500 miles...??

That's actually an INDUSTRY standard from what I've seen. Not just Honda/Acura. And don't even ask how I know that (I had a new engine put in my TSX... for reasons this thread addresses!)

That seems to be the best way to do it. Heavy load on the engine early. 2nd gear at 50 mph? What was your rpm?

Can someone clarify how to put heavy load on the engine without high rpm? I'm thinking that would be flooring it in 4th gear from 30mph to 60mph?

About 1qt per 5000 miles. Not too bad IMO.

You have to apply moderate load. Not heavy. The load cannot be too high. That's why you use 2nd or 3rd gear on the 6MT and not 4th, 5th or 6th. Also, it has to be applied over the whole RPM range. 2nd gear at 50mph is about 5500-6000rpm.

You need the whole RPM range. Too high pressure at high gear will cause blowby, which is combustion pressure getting into the crankcase. Not good.

I use about 1/2 qt between changes but I change every 15k using Amsoil. I do have a catch can, empty it once per month. Pretty minimal oil consumption, and I drive moderately spirited.
