Poll - Does your car use any oil in between changes?

Hi, just curious to see if anyone has to add top up oil in between oil change intervals?

What oil do you guys use to fill up when you're under 10k miles before the switch to Mobil 1 synthetic? I've been using Castrol GTX conventional so far.

Not one drop. Have yet to top off once after 14K miles. Most of my driving is city stop & go. I kept the break-in oil in until 5K miles and then switched to Royal Purple Full Syn. Runs great and always starts on the first couple of cranks.

Everytime you get into the vtec zone, the engine burns oil. It started with the early integras/preludes etc. So it depends how you drive. Some will take more oil and some will take less.

No. I usually drive like a granny, and I still burn oil, though much less, but still at the height of 1qt/4000km.

This morning I added oil. I was missing 3 qts.

I do WOT into VTEC zone (and sometimes also redline in at least 2nd gear) at least once or twice a week. Is that too little VTEC-ing to see oil burn according to dozorca?

200,000km!!! to sauceman
Can you snap a pic of your odometer and post it somewhere on AZ? I do BELIEVE your mileage, I just want to have pic on such an odo read-out and I can also share that with other car nut buddies of mine

I just came short of 200k today, but will do for sure tomorrow. I will take a pic, and I'll probably post it in Ramblings for better surprise effect. I mean, here everyone knows about it so what fun is that?

I'm actually surprised more don't use top up oil. I guess the 2.4L is not one of Honda's more "oil consuming" engines. I know the S2000 uses quite a bit of oil as did some RSXs and Preludes. Hmmmm, interesting.

Is the consumption a 6-spd + lead foot condition? My Accord 2.3L-5spd. that I lead foot barely uses any either at 64,000+ miles...

Our Automatic doesn't use one drop of oil, I check it often enough.
And don't ask me about the break-in it was a dealer demo car, who knows....

We picked the TSX up the used, cert. preowned.

Topping Off Oil . .. .

Just turned 1400 miles on mine (car is a little more than two weeks old) and checked the oil level . . . Couldn't believe it when I saw that I had to add almost 3/4 of a quart . . . Thought I gave up on oil eaters when I put my RX-7 to pasture . . .Oh well, and yes I definitely hit the "V-TEC" zone often . . .If this is the price to pay, who gives a sh*t . . . .The car's a blast . . . .

Acura says the capacity is 4.4 L of oil, had to put in 5.5L to fill to between the dots, don't know why it comes from the factory like that but this is apparently normal and confirmed by dealer. If you have bought recently i would check oil. It however doesn't appear to be burning which is a good sign.

I'd be royally pissed ...

if my brand new <1 YR old car was burning oil in any real quantity.

I'd buy an autodialer and leave it calling the Acura 800-complaint line while I was at work.

Are you sure you guys aren't overfilling ?

I add about 1/4 of a liter at a time until I get to exactly the middle of the top dot. After 1000km (about 600 miles), I was below the bottom dot. Took 1.25 liters to get back to the same spot as it was 1000km prior.

My '98 Prelude needed oil between changes too. It definitely was worse when using more VTEC.

I've already had to add half a quart to my TSX (was near the bottom dot). That was less than 2000 miles, I think. Although, I don't think I bothered checking the oil level when I first got it, so mebbe it was a tad low from the factory? I'll just try to remember to check it every month or two and we'll see....

curls, quint and vidgamer, how did you guy's break-in your car? I'm trying to see if there is any relationship between oil consumption and hard vs easy engine break-in.

if I wanted to burn oil I'd have bought a diesel

wow, this thread is freaking me out.

let say there was a hypothetical individual (I'll call him Mr. F) who has *never* checked his TSX oil but just sticks to the Canadian severe duty schedule with oil changes of tasty full-synthetic Mobil 1 5-30 every 8000km after the first 2 feedings.

Would he have anything to worry about ? Could this persons new car from a world-class manufactuing company really run out of oil and sieze up between expensive stealer-service intervals? Even though it was made by a company that claims to make the best gasoline engines in the world ?

According to his manual Mr. F is *supposed* to pop the hood and check the oil level every time he buys gas, but assumes that this is not required since the only other people he sees doing it have 20 year old clunkers.

Mr. F will be fine, drive your car and be happy. It's not going to consume all or even 1/4 of the oil in the engine between changes for the love.....if you can see any oil on the stick you have 4qt in the car....

HONDA2.4 re:break-in . . .

Was pretty careful with break-in period, didn't go over 70 for 1st 500 miles, and didn't rev above 5,000 (in 1st or 2d) (this as per my dealer). . . Have the AT, but use manual mode daily, since I am coming from manuals for the last 20 years (and need to hold it in 2d or 3d in turns and cloverleafs) . . . . You should know, though, that with my commute the break-in period was done in a week (even if you want to call the break-in period 600 miles as per driver's manual).

resurrect....

I was driving my 6MT TSX this evening to get some dinner when the oil light started to flash. I pulled over and check the oil... it was practically dry!! wtf!

I had a 95 integra before the TSX, it never burned oil. Whats the deal?
