Painting Mud Flaps Q's (PWP)

I've got everything I need to do the job (Adhesion Promoter/Rubberized Primer/Base Coat/Mid Coat/Clear Coat/misc paint supplies) I just have a few questions about how many coats to lay down. It looks like PWP is the only color that is a tri-coat and it's making me a bit cautious. I understand that the job of the midcoat is to go on light and slightly change the color of the basecoat. What I'm asking is, is there a general rule of thumb of how many coats of base/mid/clear should go on?

Thanks!

This was my experience.

I used 3 coats of primer, 6 of paint, and 3 of clearcoat. It was just a guess, but after almost 2 years they are holding up very well. No pealing or anything like that.
