Outgassing is the release of a gas trapped or frozen in some material. This is not to be confused with sublimation or boiling which are phase transitions of a substance into a gas.

Outgassing on spacecraft

Outgassing is a problem encountered in high-vacuum applications. For example, NASA maintains a list of low-outgassing materials to be used for spacecraft that have sensitive optics, as outgassing can cause deposits on mirrors, optical lenses, thermal radiators, or solar cells. Materials not normally considered absorbent can release enough light molecules to interfere with industrial or scientific processes. Even metals and glasses can release gases from cracks or impurities, but sealants, lubricants, and adhesives are the most common cause. The rate of outgassing increases at higher temperatures. For most solid materials, the method of manufacture and preparation can reduce the level of outgassing significantly. Cleaning surfaces or baking individual components or the entire assembly before use can drive off volatiles.
i dont know if our cars have enough HP to leave the earth's atmosphere so i dont know if NASA has looked into it for our cars yet....

I have heard this term used in connection with cars. In fact, it was used by a friend of mine that works at an Acura dealer. Regardless of whether the term is being used correctly or not, it is my understanding that the term is intended to apply to the release of any solvents, conditioners and the like from the interior materials of a car, generally plastics, leather, vinyl and carpeting. It is the release of these materials that causes a slight haze on the interior glass and mirrors. I was told that there is very little that can be done about it, except wait it out and clean these interior surfaces. My experience has been that after a few warm months, the outgassing stops (at least noticeably)....

jlukja, who guessed that "outgassing" meant overfilling your tank till the gas leaked out.

And to answer the silly question...

To prevent it, don't overfill the tank. When the valve shuts off, it's done. No more. No más. Niet meer. Nicht mehr. Nient'altro. Não mais.

Outgassing is mentioned once in the whole article...

And you should have made it clearer in your original post. Would have been less confusion.

I'm kinda enjoying all the silly replies to the original post, so if he would have made it more clear to start, it would have been a much more boring thread.

I guess I shouldn't beat my wife anymore and blame her for the window haze caused by smoking in the car. I wonder if she outgasses?

Ahem! Back in order folks! Enough with the troutslap. Use it wisely dzuy, because it will definitely disappear someday if you don't.

That being said elephant, I didn't know what outgassing was, but found your references an interesting read.

I am one of those who thoroughly enjoy the smell of outgassing. It's a shame it doesn't last longer.

Still, admit you gotta love the humor round here.

Finally, a serious response to the original post about stopping outgassing in a TSX. I try really hard not to outgas inmy TSX, and luckily I've not done it yet. Well, once, but I had the windows down. It really takes away from that "new car smell" when outgassing occurs.
I have carpool riders, and I guess eventually they'll outgas at some time, but I don't know how to prevent it, so like the initiator of this thread, I am concerned about it. As mentioned before, a thin film of gaseous emittants is deposited over the surface of the interior, most noticeable on glass, etc. Of course, the outgassing is noticeable in other ways, too. A lighter or match will help a bit. When my wife eats chocolate cake, she really outgasses ... If you've ever seen video footage of volcanologists attempting to approach a crater spewing lava, dressed up in one of those bulky heat-protective suits and handling samples with tongs, you've got a mental picture of the dangerous consequences of chocolate cake outgassing. Thought I'd share.

Don't eat at Taco Bell?

I dunno if I would call it outgassing, but when I first bought my TSX the ebony interior had little flecks of silver, which I always assumed was from the dash, as it was the exact same color as the silver trim and looked the same. There seemed to be quite a bit of it on the back seat. Vacuumed right up, though.
